The stars have arrived on Singapore’s shores – 126 of them from 34 countries for the FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup 2016. The meet, which takes place on October 21-22, will see the likes of Olympics medallists Katinka Hosszú, Kyle Chalmers, and Chad le Clos battle it out at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.

The 126 international swimmers will be joined by 151 Singaporean athletes - the largest Singaporean contingent ever to swim at a FINA World Cup. The Singaporean swimmers participating include Team Singapore swimmers i.e. those part of the National Training Centre (NTC) squad, as well as swimmers representing several of the island’s swimming clubs.

Beyond returning to the short-course format, this year’s FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup 2016
will mark its 10th anniversary in Singapore.

Speaking at the International Swim Stars Meet-and-Greet of the FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup 2016 presented, Lee Kok Choy, President of the Singapore Swimming Association said:

“Hosting this wonderful meet over the past decade has been a privilege and honour that we continue to be grateful for. Over the last decade, we’ve seen world-class athletes train, compete and also give back to the swimming community in Singapore. Having them here has enhanced our aquatics sporting culture, giving our local athletes the opportunity to compete and learn from their role-models, and our coaches and officials the chance to interact and share best practices with their global counterparts.”

The meet-and-greet session was attended by star swimmers Chad le Clos from South Africa, Kanako Watanabe, Masato Sakai and Daiya Seto from Japan, Hilary Caldwell from Canada, Kyle Chalmers, Mitch Larkin and Emily Seebohm from Australia and Josh Prenot from the United States.

Also present at the meet-and-greet session was Takahiro Matsuda, President of airweave, title partner of the FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup for 2015, 2016 and 2017, who addressed the crowd:

“This is our second year as an official partner of FINA and we are very happy of our continued support of the world cup and our involvement in aquatic sports.”

Fresh from his Rio Olympic pursuit, silver medallist Chad le Clos shared,:

“It is a great feeling seeing so many fans here, and I hope I was able to inspire them, especially the young swimming fans. I am thrilled to be back here in Singapore again - It feels like my second home. While there is going to be tough competition ahead in the two-day swim meet with the world’s best all gathered here, I’m sure we will be able to put up a good fight for fans here in Singapore.”

Although making his FINA Swimming World Cup Singapore debut, Australian Kyle Chalmers swam at the 2015 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Singapore last year. Speaking at the press conference, he said:

“It’s great being back in Singapore. I won gold medals in the 50 and 100 metre freestyle last year, and I’m looking forward to getting back into the OCBC Aquatic Centre pool to swim against some of the world’s best.”
