Australia’s Isaac Cooper looked every part a potential world champion in last night’s semi finals as he used every centimetre of permitted underwater work to rocket through as top qualifier in the Men’s 50m Backstroke in an new Oceanian record. Cooper will be chasing Australia’s second gold medal in the pool tonight and will be hoping to eclipse his disappointment of narrowly missing the medals in this event in Fukuoka.

Defending champion Hunter Armstrong will race alongside Cooper in the opening final of tonight’s session with the United States of America swimmer aiming for his third straight podium and his second individual gold of the meet. Armstrong is also the world record holder in this event.

It was the tale of two heats in the preliminaries of the Men’s 1500m Freestyle yesterday morning with six swimmers progressing from the penultimate heat and only two making it through from the fourth and final heat. Amongst the casualties in that slower final heat were top seed Ahmed Hafnaoui, three-time world champion in this event Gregorio Paltrinieri, the United States of America’s Charlie Clark, and 800m Freestyle finalist Luca De Tullio. The only two swimmers that progressed through from that heat were new 800m Freestyle World Champion Daniel Wiffen and emerging teen superstar Kuzey Tuncelli. Wiffen and Tuncelli will swim from lanes seven and eight tonight.

Florian Wellbrock progressed through as the fastest swimmer with the German currently medal-less in Doha after medal hauls at the past three World Aquatics Championships. France’s David Aubry will swim alongside Wellbrock in the middle of the pool as he chases his first medal since a bronze in the 800m Freestyle at Gwangju 2019.
