Men's 3m Springboard

China

China has won the men's 3m springboard a record eight times at the world aquatics championships, including at each of the last seven editions. The most recent non-Chinese athlete to win the world title in this event was Alexandre Despatie (CAN, 2005).

At the Olympic Games, China won six of the last seven gold medals awarded in this event. The only exception was Ilya Zakharov's (RUS) triumph at London 2012.

Xie Siyi (CHN) won this event at the last three global tournaments, at the 2017 and 2019 FINA World Championships and at Tokyo 2020, but has since retired from the sport.

Cao Yuan (CHN, G6-S3-B2) has collected 11 medals at the world aquatics championships and Olympic Games combined, including Olympic gold (2016) and world championship silver (2019) in the 3m springboard. The only male divers to have claimed more medals at these two tournaments are Dmitriy Sautin (EUN/RUS, 17) and Qin Kai (CHN, 12).

The four divers to have won the Olympic title and world title in this event are Phil Boggs (USA), Greg Louganis (USA), He Chong (CHN) and Xie Siyi.

Cao can become the second athlete to win the men's 3m springboard world title after claiming silver in the previous edition, after Dmitriy Sautin (RUS) in 1998.

Wang Zongyuan (CHN) finished second in this event at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He could follow in the footsteps of Alexandre Despatie who won the 2005 world title in this event directly after claiming Olympic silver (2004) in the same event.

Other contenders

Four divers won gold in the men's 3m springboard individual and synchro event at the same world aquatics championships: Aleksandr Dobroskok (RUS, 2003), Qin Kai (CHN, 2007), He Chong (CHN, 2013) and Xie Siyi (CHN, 2019).

Jack Laugher (GBR) finished on the podium in this event at four of the last five global tournaments (Olympic Games, world aquatics championships): world championships bronze in 2015 and 2019, Olympic silver in 2016 and Olympic bronze in 2021. He finished fifth at the 2017 FINA World Championships.

Laugher could become the fifth diver to claim at least five medals in the men's 3m springboard at the world aquatics championships and Olympic Games combined, after Dmitriy Sautin (RUS, 8), He Chong (CHN, 6), Alexandre Despatie (CAN, 5) and Tan Liangde (CHN, 5).

Woo Haram (KOR) finished fourth in this event at the 2019 FINA World Championships and at Tokyo 2020. Coming into this tournament, the only diver representing Republic of Korea to have claimed a medal at the global tournaments is Kim Suji, who took bronze in the women's 1m springboard in 2019.

United States has won six gold and nine total medals in this event at the world aquatics championships. Only China (8) picked up more world titles in this event, while both China (17) and Russia (12, excluding Soviet Union) are on more medals.

USA's most recent world championships silverware in the men's 3m springboard dates back to 2009, when Troy Dumais finished in second place behind world champion He Chong.

Anton Down-Jenkins (NZL) finished eighth in this event at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He was the first male diver to represent New Zealand at the Olympic Games since 1984. At the 2019 FINA World Championships, Down-Jenkins finished 48th in the men's 3m springboard.

Men's 10m Platform Synchro

China

China won eight of the available 11 gold medals in the men's synchronized 10m platform at the world aquatics championships, including each of the last three. Australia (2003), Russia (2005) and Germany (2013) won the other three world titles in this event.

China finished on the podium in this event each of the previous 11 times it was contested at the world aquatics championships: G8-S1-B2.

The men's synchronized 10m platform was the only diving event China failed to win at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Cao Yuan (CHN) and Chen Aisen (CHN) took silver behind Tom Daley (GBR) and Matty Lee (GBR).

Recently retired Chen Aisen won this event at each of the last three world aquatics championships, with three different partners: Lin Yue (CHN, 2015), Yang Hao (CHN, 2017) and Cao Yuan (2019).

Cao Yuan is one of five athletes to have won this event at both the Olympic Games (2012) and world aquatics championships (2019). He also claimed bronze in this event at the 2013 FINA World Championships and silver at Tokyo 2020.

Coming into Budapest 2022, Cao Yuan (G6-S3-B2) had collected 11 medals at the world aquatics championships and Olympic Games combined. The only male divers who had claimed more at these two tournaments were Dmitriy Sautin (EUN/RUS, 17) and Qin Kai (CHN, 12).

Other contenders

Tom Daley (GBR) and Matty Lee (GBR) won the men's synchronized 10m platform at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. It marked the only diving event not won by Chinese athletes.

Daley and Lee claimed the bronze medal in this event at the 2019 FINA World Championships. It was Great Britain's second world championships medal in this event, after bronze by Peter Waterfield and Leon Taylor in 2005.

At the previous seven world aquatics championships, the only non-Chinese athletes to win gold in this event were Germany's Sascha Klein and Patrick Hausding in 2013.

Oleh Serbin (UKR) and Oleksii Sereda (UKR) took fourth in the men's synchronized 10m platform at the 2019 FINA World Championships. Ukraine picked up three world championships medals in this event: bronze in 2001 and 2011, and silver in 2003.

The 16-year-old Sereda could become the third youngest diver to claim a medal in this event at the world aquatics championships, after 2001 bronze medallist Anton Zakharov (UKR, 15y-163d) and 2007 gold medallist Lin Yue (CHN, 15y-245d).

Nathan Zsombor-Murray (CAN) and Vincent Riendeau (CAN) placed fifth in this event at Tokyo 2020. Canada has yet to claim a medal in this event at the FINA World Championships.
