Dates: August 6-20, 2016 Events: Men’s (12 teams) and women’s (8 teams) tournaments Venue: Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre (first week), 6’500 seats; Aquatics Stadium (second week), 14’000 seats Number of athletes: 260 (156 men, 104 women) Maximum number of athletes per country: 26 (13 men and 13 women) Qualification pathway: For men: FINA World League 2015, FINA World Championships 2015, Continental Championships/Host Country, Olympic Games Qualification Tournament; For women: Continental Championships/Host Country, Olympic Games Qualification Tournament Competition format: Men – 12 teams are divided in two groups of 6: the tournament comprises preliminaries (Day 1-5), quarter-final round (Day 6), semi-final round (Day 7) and final round (Day 8); Women – 8 teams are divided in two groups of 4: the tournament comprises preliminaries (Day 1-3), quarter-final round (Day 4), semi-final round (Day 5) and final round (Day 6). The games of the men’s and women’s tournaments are played in alternate days Competition results: Men: at the end of the preliminary round, the teams ranked sixth in each group are ranked 11-12th, while the teams ranked fifth in each group are ranked 9-10th, in accordance with their win-loss record in the respective group; in the quarter-final round, the best four teams in each group during the preliminaries will play a modified single elimination format; the losers and winners of these four games will play between them in the semi-final round; in the final round, losers in the semi-final will play for places 5-8, while the winners will battle for places 1-4; Women: at the end of the preliminary round, the best four teams in each group during the preliminaries will play a modified single elimination format in the quarter-final round; the losers and winners of these four games will play between them in the semi-final round; in the final round, losers in the semi-final will play for places 5-8, while the winners will battle for places 1-4. Matches played from the quarter-final on must have a winner, so a session of penalty shoot-out may be necessary (for both men and women).
