The sixth and penultimate leg of the 2019 FINA Swimming World Cup in Kazan (RUS), on November 1-3, was highlighted by the excellent performances of the local stars – namely Vladislav Grinev in the men’s 100m free -, and by the three gold medals of Hungarian great Katinka Hosszu, who now has an accumulated total record of 302 individual gold medals in the competition.

On Day 1, the Magyar ace swam the women’s 200m fly in a winning time of 2:08.23, thus amassing her 300th title in World Cup races, an unprecedented feat. Hosszu got two additional gold medals in the Russian rendezvous, in the 200m and 400m IM.

Russian swimmers were in excellent shape in Kazan, with 16 victories in the capital of Tatarstan. The leader of the overall ranking, Vladimir Morozov, was the best in the 50m free and 50m back, but lost the 100m free final to his teammate Vladislav Grinev. The 23-year-old touched home in a new World Cup Record of 47.78, improving the time (47.88) of Morozov (second in 48.15 in Kazan) from the Singaporean leg.

Still among men, Illia Druzhinin won the 1500m free, Grigory Tarasevich was the fastest in the 100m back, Anton Chupkov made the double in the 100m-200m breast, Mikhail Vekovishchev shone in the 100m fly and Daniil Pakhomov controlled operations in the 200m fly.

In the women’s field, Daria Ustinova (200m) and Anna Egorova (400m) were the strongest in freestyle action, while Arina Surkova triumphed in the 50m-100m fly. Mariia Temnikova (200m breast) was also an individual winner for Russia, whose teams also claimed the two relay (mixed 4x100m free and 4x100m medley) titles.

In terms of the overall ranking of the competition, Morozov remains the provisional leader with 297 points, while Danas Rapsys (LTU), winner of the 200m and 400m free in Kazan, is second with 210. Michael Andrew (USA), third (162), added in Russia another gold to his roll of honour, finishing first in the 50m fly.

Cate Campbell (AUS), gold medallist in the 50m and 100m free in Kazan, leads the women’s ranking, with 300 points, but is closely followed by Hosszu, who has 276. Michelle Coleman (SWE) completes the top-3, with 153.

The FINA Swimming World Cup action will now stop in the seventh and last meet of the 2019 season, taking place in Doha (QAT) on November 7-9.
