Congratulations to all our Water Polo athletes who made these competitions such a great success.
You showcased the very best of our sport and delivered so many thrilling matches. We saw dominant victories and hard-fought draws, and shock defeats and unexpected comebacks, as emerging teams and established nations went head-to-head in the fight for gold.

While only some of you could win medals, you all helped to elevate our sport to new standards and captured the imagination of fans around the world.

We know you have faced many challenges to be here and we are grateful for your dedication to the sport. To be a Water Polo player requires great physical and mental strength and that has been clear for us all to see not just here in Tokyo but throughout the pandemic.

I have enjoyed being able to meet with you and discuss our exciting plans for the future. Athletes are at the centre of these plans and so we will be engaging with you more as we continue to improve and develop Aquatics.

In the meantime, I wish you all a safe trip home and some well-deserved rest.
