Maurer won the bronze medal at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona in the 10km marathon race. In Cancun, she claims her first win on the 2014 circuit. She took home another bronze medal in the first stage of the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup in Viedma (ARG).

Local hope Melissa Villasenor has a surprise third-place finish, crossing the finish line at 3h31m22s for her first FINA Grand Prix podium appearance. Villasenor beat top qualifier Pilar Geijo from Argentina, who finished fourth in Cancun after garnering a gold and bronze in the two previous Grand Prix legs.



In the men's race, Dutch newcomer Weertman Ferry emerged victorious in 3h04m06s, ahead of strong performers Simone Ercoli (ITA, 3h04m07s), first in Viedma (ARG), and compatriot Marcel Schouten, third in 3h05m14s.
