The final edition of the 2017 FINA/NVC Diving World Series began in Windsor, Canada on Friday with the efficient and accomplished athletes from China winning three of the four events on the first day of competition.  China's consistency was tested in Windsor by the women of the host nation in Friday's events, and the Chinese men lost their claim to a clean sweep of the 3m synchro springboard events.

The Chinese divers arrived in Windsor with near total domination of the first three legs. Chinese athletes won 29 of the 30 gold medals from the previous events held in Beijing, Guangzhou, CHN and Kazan, RUS.  Only Jack Laugher of Great Britain was able to break through China's "Great Wall" of series championship titles.  Laugher won the men's 3m springboard on March 4th in the iconic Water Cube in Beijing.

A total of 73 of the world's top divers representing 13 nations will be competing for medals and prize money at the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre throughout the weekend.  On Sunday the overall 2017 FINA/NVC Diving World Series winners will be named.

In the first event Qian REN and her partner Yajie SI scored 336.66 points to capture the women's 10m synchronized event for China beating the pairs from Malaysia and Great Britian. In the men's 10m synchro event Hao YANG and Aisen Chen of China earned 477.84 to best the pairs from Germany and Russia.

In the men's 3m synchronized event the Russian pair of Evgeni KUZNETSOV and Illia ZAKHAROV scored 422.88 points and an upset by edging out the pair from Mexico who claimed the silver medal.  China's paid of Yuan CAO and Siyi XIE having won this event in the first three events of the series settled for third place medals in the series finale.

The Chinese duo of Yani CHANG and Tingmao SHI scored 310.80 points bettering the team from the host nation in the women's 3m synchoro springboard event.  Jennifer ABEL and Mélissa CITRINI-BEAULIEU put Canada on the podium with their tally of 305.52 points.

The silver medal is ABEL and CITRINI-BEAULIEU’s second synchro medal of the Diving World Series season, the Canadians won a bronze in Guangzhou, China in March.  The two Canadians were paired for the 2017 season as Abel’s Olympic partner from 2016, Pamela WARE was recovering from an injury.

ABEL 25, and CITRINI-BEAULIEU, 21, were leading the Chinese, and in first place, after four out of five dives. CITRINI-BEAULIEU, from St. Constant, Quebec., says she wasn’t aware of the exact placing but knew they were close.

“We didn’t overreact, that was good, we did our job and didn’t get distracted by that,” said CITRINI-BEAULIEU. On Friday, SHI and CHANG would prevail on the final dive.

“It’s really successful,” said ABEL on going two-for-four, “We have to know that everybody here knows each other, the teams are not new, we’re competing against the best in the world, so it’s really good what we did here.”

About the 2017 FINA/NVC Diving World Series

The FINA/NVC Diving World Series is the premiere annual multi-city diving competition in the world. In 2017, there are four World Series events taking place in Beijing (CHN), Guangzhou (CHN), Kazan (RUS) and Windsor (CAN). The competitive program closely mirrors that of the Olympic Games. The eight other Olympic events to be staged are women’s and men’s 3-metre springboard, 10-metre platform, 3-metre springboard synchro and 10-metre platform synchro. Mixed synchronized events will also be contested.

Divers are invited to participate at the 2017 World Series based on their results from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The top-8 ranked divers in each individual event and the top-6 teams in each synchronized event earn qualification, while host countries are guaranteed representation in each event.
