Shenzhen (CHN), Day 1: China delights fans with five gold

The first day of the inaugural leg of the 2020 FINA Champions Swim Series in Shenzhen (CHN) provided thrilling battles in the pool, with China largely dominating operations with five gold medals. Hungary and Italy were also quite solid, with two titles apiece, in a session that saw swimmers from 18 countries to get at least one medal.

Xu Jiayu (CHN): “It’s great to have the best of the world in one place”

A couple of hours before starting to compete in the 2020 edition of the FINA Champions Swim Series, two-time world champion Xu Jiayu considers his battlefield – the men's 100m backstroke – a "tangled war" with seven/eight close rivals in the world and he is always anxious and excited to meet the strongest swimmers in the competition.

Atkinson (JAM): The smiling storywriter

“Always compete with a smile”. A powerful motto and the trademark of Alia Atkinson, the breaststroke ace from Jamaica. It was also one of the most iconic scenes at the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), in Doha (QAT), when she got the gold medal in the 100m breaststroke, in a (equalled) World Record time. When looking at the scoreboard, Atkinson could not hide her astonishment and her famous smile immediately came after the initial surprise. Outside the water, this positive and humble attitude also follows her everywhere.

Ottesen (DEN): “I wanted to try this attractive format!”

At 32, Jeanette Ottesen, from Denmark, has quite a busy life. Two years after the birth of her daughter, she is determined to compete in her fifth Olympic Games, this summer in Tokyo (JPN). In the meantime, she starts 2020 by taking part in the FINA Champions Swim Series, for which she was invited to take part in the 50m and 100m fly. And she looks forward to swimming from this Tuesday in Shenzhen (CHN), and then again during the weekend in Beijing (CHN). “I wasn’t invited in 2019, but I am very happy to be here in 2020”, she confesses, a day before her first performances in the pool.

CSS 2020: All set in Shenzhen for a great event

“Happy and thankful for being here”. The words are from Danish star Jeanette Ottesen, but express the general feeling among athletes ready to take part in the first 2020 leg of the FINA Champions Swim Series, starting this Tuesday in Shenzhen (CHN). There were four of them in the Press Conference opening the event: from China, superstars Sun Yang and Ye Shiwen and from the “rest of the world” Nicholas Santos (BRA) and Ottesen.
