Two (2) events are included in the program of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games for Water Polo: Men's Tournament (12 teams) and Women's Tournament (10 teams)

ATHLETE ELIGIBILITY 

Compliance with the Olympic Charter and other relevant rules

All athletes must respect and comply with the provisions of the Olympic Charter currently in force, including but not limited to Rule 41 (Nationality of Competitors) and Rule 43 (World Anti-Doping Code and the Olympic Movement Code on the Prevention of Manipulation of Competitions).

Only those athletes who respect and comply with the Olympic Charter, the World Anti-Doping Code and the Olympic Movement Code on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions, including the conditions of participation established by the IOC, plus the rules of AQUA, may participate in the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

Additional eligibility criteria/requirements

Only the athletes who are eligible to participate at the official World Aquatics Competitions, in accordance with the Competition Regulations are entitled to participate in the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

Men

World Aquatics Championships Fukuoka 2023 

The two (2) highest placed NOCs from the World Aquatics Championships Fukuoka 2023 will each obtain one (1) quota place. 

1 team (12 athletes)

Host Country

The host country NOC will automatically obtain a quota place. See Point F (below) for how an unused quota place will be reallocated.

5 teams (60 Athletes)

Continental Qualification

The highest placing NOC/NF in each of the five (5) Continental Championships will each obtain one (1) quota place.

Should any of these NOCs have already obtained a quota place at the World Aquatics Championships Fukuoka 2023, then the next highest placed NOC from the respective Continental Championships will obtain a quota place.

Should any of the Continental Championships not take place, the next highest placing NOC from that respective Continent at the World Aquatics  Championships Doha 2024 will obtain a quota place.

Should there be only one (1) representative from a specific continent, this NOC will obtain a quota place.

4 teams (48 Athletes) 

World Aquatics Championships Doha 2024

The four (4) highest placing NOCs at the World Aquatics Championships Doha 2024, not yet qualified via the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, or via continental qualification events, will each obtain one (1) quota place. The teams that are eligible to take part in the qualification tournament is specified in the qualification document for World Aquatics Championships Doha 2024

World Aquatics Championships Fukuoka 2023

The two (2) highest placing NOCs from the women’s competition at the World Aquatics Championships Fukuoka 2023 will each obtain a quota place. 

1 team (12 athletes)

Host Country

The Host Country NOC will automatically obtain a quota place. See Point F (below) for how an unused quota place will be reallocated.

5 teams (60 Athletes)

Continental Championships

The highest placing NOC in each of the five (5) Continental Championships will each obtain a quota place. If the NOC is already qualified at the preceding World Aquatics Championships Fukuoka 2023, then the next highest placed team from the respective Continental Championships will qualify.

Should any of the Continental Championships not take place, the next highest placing NOC from that respective Continent at the World Aquatics Championships Doha 2024 will obtain a quota place.

Should there only be one representative from a specific continent, this NOC will obtain a quota place.

2 teams (24 Athletes) 

World Aquatics Championships Doha 2024

The two (2) highest placing NOCs at the World Aquatics Championships Doha 2024 will each obtain a quota place. The teams that are eligible to take part in the qualification tournament is specified in the Competition Regulations.

 

The host country is guaranteed one (1) team quota place per gender.

CONFIRMATION PROCESS FOR QUOTA PLACES 

Following each qualification event, World Aquatics will publish the results on its website (http://www.worldaquatics.com/) and inform the respective NOCs of their allocated quota places.

The NOCs will then have 21 days to confirm if they wish to use these quota places, as detailed in paragraph H. Qualification Timeline.

The host country shall confirm the use of the allocated quota places to World Aquatics two (2) weeks after the end of the World Aquatics Championships Doha 2024.

REALLOCATION OF UNUSED QUOTA PLACES

Any unused quota places will be reallocated to the next highest placed NOC according to the ranking of the World Aquatics Championships Doha 2024, as applicable.

REALLOCATION OF UNUSED HOST COUNTRY PLACES 

Definition:

Ap athletes are non-competing athletes accredited in the “Ap” category who have different entitlements to competing athletes (accredited as “Aa”) as described in the “Ap” accreditation quotas and conditions outlined in the IOC Accreditation Guide. These personnel are not part of the athlete quota as described in Paragraph B. Quota Places. “Ap” alternate athletes could become competing athletes only under the conditions outlined in the IOC/Paris 2024 Late Athlete Replacement policy.

Eligibility: “Ap” athletes must comply with the same eligibility rules as competing athletes as described in paragraph C. Athlete Eligibility.

Quota:

Each qualified team is entitled to one (1) Ap alternate athlete.
