Greece pulled off a big upset in taking the quarter-final against World Cup champion Australia. In the words of Australian captain Mel RIPPON: "You can't score three goals and hope to win a game". Australia was made to look ordinary by Greece went ahead 2-0 and then 3-1 with two penalty goals and one on extra. Australia kept Greece goal-less for the next 20 minutes but only scored two in that period. GEROLYMOU scored her fourth goal with a lob 90 seconds from full time and Australia, as with much of the game, had no answer. Neither side performed on extra-man plays.
