Russia wins six gold, but Spain is the overall best
Saturday, 25 July 2009 19:51
In the last event – Team Free - of the synchronised swimming competitions of these 13th FINA World Championships, Russia conquered its sixth gold medal, beating once more Spain and China, who got respectively the silver and bronze. Despite these successes, the regularity of the Iberians in Rome was rewarded with the FINA Trophy for the best nation in the competition: in the Italian capital, Spain conquered one gold (Free Combination, where the Russians were absent) and six silver medals (in the events Russia came first – solo, duet and team, both in technical and free).

Italy enters the world’s “elite club”
Thursday, 23 July 2009 19:33

Natalia Ishchenko gave Russia its fourth gold medal of the synchronised swimming competitions at the 13th FINA World Championships Rome 2009 by winning the final of the Solo Free event. After the victories in the Team Technical, Solo Technical (also Ishchenko) and Duet Technical, Russia is dominating the operations, but is also being closely followed by Spain, who conquered the silver medal (its fourth, in the events where Russians were first), one day after getting its first World Championships’ gold in the Free Combination. In third, a new nation made its entry into the “club” of countries having medalled at the FINA World Championships – Italy (with its star Beatrice Adelizzi).

Spain gets finally the gold
Wednesday, 22 July 2009 18:36
Spain finally got its first gold medal in synchronised swimming at the FINA World Championships, after winning the Free Combination event - the fourth final of the 2009 edition of the competition in Rome (ITA). After arriving in the Italian capital with 13 medals since 2003, the Spanish squad had conquered three more silver awards in the first three events of the 13th FINA World Championships and, after a very solid programme, got its first world title with a total of 98.333. Gemma Mengual and her teammates were inspired by the music of Led Zeppelin (“Stairway to Heaven”), leaving behind an elegant routine from China (97.667) and the quite spectacular squad of Canada (96.167).

Davydova changes partner but continues winning
Tuesday, 21 July 2009 14:57
Russia’s Anastasia Davydova is surely one of the best synchronised swimmers in history. Perhaps the best. In Rome, the Russian icon added one more victory to her impressive medal collection, the gold in the Duet Technical event. But the reputation of Davydova, competing at the highest world level since 2001, is often (and with reason) associated to her “counterpart” in the pool, the other famous Anastasia – Ermakova. After their fourth Olympic gold medal, at the end of the 2008 Games in Beijing (CHN), Ermakova decided to do a break in her career (justified with some tiredness of the competition and hard training associated with it), but Davydova thought she could continue shining. The fans of synchro are happy with her decision. At the 13th FINA World Championships, Davydova competed in the Duet Technical with another partner, Svetlana Romashina, and still managed to revalidate the title conquered in Melbourne (2007), but also Montreal (2005) and Barcelona (2003).

Team Technical - Russia wins, Japan out of the podium
Sunday, 19 July 2009 16:15

The first final of synchronised swimming at the 13th FINA World Championships – the Team Technical event – provoked the first surprise of the competition in this discipline: if the victory of Russia was expected (and natural), the fifth place of Japan constitutes a serious hiccup in the history of this country’s successful tradition in synchronised swimming: since 1973, Japan has always been on the podium of the team event, including in 2007, when the programme was split between the technical and free finals.
