In the opening match of the day, both teams wanted to leave the tournament with their heads up. Nevertheless Brazil showed more quality at the beginning and arrived to the half time leading by 5-2. The margin during the second part remained at the same level, and the South Americans, who had Isabella Chiappini and Mirella Coutinho in great shape with three goals each, celebrated their second consecutive win in the championship, concluded in 13th place.

Another one-direction game took place with New Zealand making a morning cruise against Uzbekistan. The two teams battled for a place among the best-ten of the tournament. New Zealanders, having Ferigo Ricci on fire (6 goals) made a flying start to the match, getting before the half time break a clear difference of seven goals, while Uzbeks did not seem able to cause any real threat and only scored their solitary during the third period. After this result, New Zealand will play against Canada for the 9th place.

Canada’s performances against Greece and Spain proved that the North Americans could perhaps deserve a place in the final-eight. However, the defeat from Italy on Thursday evening forced them to fight only for the 9th position. Without much effort, the Canadians succeeded before the end of the first part to grab a safe advantage of seven goals (8-1), which gradually got more important. As it was expected, they achieved their first win at the world championship and on Saturday they will play against New Zealand for their final game in the tournament. Worth of note is the fact that after Ukraine’s goal, the players of Guy Baker scored fourteen consecutive goals!

The opening match of the quarterfinals phase proved once again why the USA is supposed to be one of the favourite teams for the gold medal.  Although the Americans were not on their best shape, they secured a vital qualification and came closer to the final. The first period was quite balanced, with a 2-2 tie. However, in the second quarter, USA built a difference of three goals and went to the half time with more confidence. The second half was a completely different game. One minute before the end of the third period, while USA was having an advantage of 12-7, Hungary scored a goal which kept their hopes alive. In the last period, the Magyars tried for the ultimate comeback. The game had excellent rhythm with the ball going from the one goalpost to the other. The Hungarian squad came close to two (12-10) five minutes before the end, but the Americans withstand the pressure and could celebrate a fair win.

The second game of the quarterfinals was even more undecided than the first one. From the early beginning, the match was balanced and the lead changed quite often. Despite an early lead (3-2) from Australia, the Iberians then recovered to a 5-3 advantage, but the Aussies managed to recover and reach the half time in front (6-5). In the third period the rhythm of the game fell, but the Australians were still in control of the match (7-6). Nonetheless, it seemed the Iberians had kept the best for the end. Not only they succeeded to equalize but also after a dramatic end, with Aymerich (most valuable player) scoring the golden goal at 26 seconds from the end, they took the advantage while everything was showing extra time. As a result, they earned a place in the semifinals where they will meet Russia.

Another really interesting match, maybe the greatest of the five days, between two of the best teams, took place in the national swimming pool of Volos. Finally, it was Russia which laughed at the end of this incredible thriller. Four quarters were not enough, and as a result the two teams solved their differences in the extra time. But let’s take the thing from the beginning: Russia entered the match with much more confidence and at the end of the first period they were in front by 5-3. From then, Italy succeeded not only to balance but also to take the control of the match. Neither of the teams could, however, take a safe advantage – the key factor for that was the really poor rate for both squads on extra-man – and as a result the game went to extra time. There, Russia played more concentrated, while the Italians’ stress mirrored on the fact that they missed a penalty two minutes before the end of the second part followed by a lost clear cut chance on extra-man. The final whistle was a celebration time for Russia, playing against Spain in the semis.

This match was the less stressful of all the quarterfinals games. Greece this time, being the clear favourite, appeared much more concentrated in order to prevent troubles like against Canada. The score at half time was 9-0 for the home country and the second part also went without major problems for the Hellenic side. Eventually, the difference stopped at +11. The easy win allowed Greek coach, Giorgos Morfesis, to give more playing time to athletes who haven’t played a lot in the previous days such as Stefania Terefu and Maria Sora and also to rest the basic players. Greece is now turning its attention to the difficult semifinal against the USA, where for the first time they are supposed to be the… outsiders.
