One day after the important win against Spain, Greece just needed one point against Canada in front of their supporters (the pool in Volos was again crowded) in order to celebrate their qualification in the final eight. However, the match did not go as the Greek squad wanted to. The players of Giorgos Morfesis (the Greek coach) looked really anxious and confused, performing bad attacking decisions. As a result, the half time score was 3-5 for Canada. The second part of the match looked a lot to the first one. Greece was trying to take the advantage without success and the pressure was getting bigger and bigger. Canada on the other hand seemed very concentrated and three minutes before the end of the match the score was 6-9 for Canada and the loss for the previous World Champions was really close. However, Greece hadn’t said its last word. With an amazing comeback, the Hellenic side succeeded not only to equalize but also to take the two points with an amazing shoot and a decisive goal of Vasiliki Diamantopoulou (most valuable player of the match) in the last second of the game. With this win Greece finished in the first position and grabs a place to the final eight, where it will find the winner of the match between Great Britain and Uzbekistan.

This match was one of the less interesting games of the day, as both teams had already ensured their participation in the next round (USA as first qualifier to the quarterfinals). Consequently, the two coaches were able to test new tactics and combinations. In the first period the game was balanced, but on the second one USA took the lead by scoring four consecutive goals and went to the halftime break with three goals ahead (8-5). In the second half, even though the rhythm of the game fell, the score difference became even bigger. At the final whistle, the North Americans celebrated their third victory during the group phase and a place to the final eight, where they will face either Hungary or Ukraine, while New Zealanders will oppose Spain in the qualification round.

The third game of the evening session had a clear favorite against one of the weakest teams of the tournament. As expected, Italy made a relaxing cruise, from the beginning of the match, as the first period concluded already with a 8-1 difference. In the second part of the game, Italy continued to score with Claudia Marletta looking unstoppable (5 goals), and the only real “mystery” was to guess the final score – 24-6, the biggest win on the three days. Italy will now face Canada, with Kazakhstan will fight for the 12th position.

In the opening match of the day, Australia, without getting to the high number of goals of the previous days, collected another victory against Uzbekistan and has already its mind in the quarterfinals. Before the end of the first half the Aussies, with Chloe Barr (four goals) leading the operations, built a safe difference of five goals (6-1) which allowed their coach Ryan Moar to make a lot of changes and to give valuable breaks to all his players for the upcoming days of the tournament. Australia, who also became the first team with three victories in the championship, is waiting to know its opponent at the final eight, who will arise from tomorrow’s game between Spain and New Zealand. On the other hand, Uzbekistan finished in the second place of the group and will face Great Britain in the qualification round.

It seems that Ukraine kept the best for the end. Having in mind that this match was their last chance to keep alive the hopes for a participation in the final eight, the Ukrainians did everything they could and finally succeeded to qualify to the next round. The game was balanced from the beginning and none of the teams could gain the control of the operations. South Africa needed just a draw to secure a place in the qualification round and this was perhaps the reason why they played in a soft tone. The half time found Ukraine in front with a 6-5 advantage, with Kateryna Fedutenko leading the team (3 goals). In the second half, the situation remained as it was. Ukrainians, having also the support from Uzbekistan, wanted the win and after a dramatic end, when South Africa lost a penalty in the last minute, they celebrated their huge success.

In the last of the morning’s game, Russia achieved to become the second team after Australia with three victories on the group phase. Having locked from Tuesday the first place of the group, they did not activate the “top gear” in order to remain fresh for the next days of the tournament. Nevertheless, they gradually grew the difference and went to the halftime with a 5-1 advantage. Great Britain on the other hand, tried to keep the score sheet at a low level, in order to qualify as third of the group, after Brazil’s draw in the second round. Their mission was successful and the final whistle found the English supporters celebrating despite the loss, as the ten-goal-difference loss in combination with Brazilian’s defeat from Hungary later, gave Great Britain the ticket for the qualification round, where they will meet Uzbekistan. As for Russia, it will play against the winner of the game between Canada and Italy.

Despite the fact it was Brazil who needed the points, Hungary was the team who entered the match with more confidence. Both teams preferred to play in an attacking style, and as a result the half time found the Magyars in front with 7-5. As the time passed, the margin was growing (at the half of the third period the score was 9-5). Although the situation seemed really difficult, Brazilians tried for the ultimate comeback. Nevertheless, they succeeded nothing better than to get closer by two goals and the loss came normally. The key of the match was the inability of Brazil to score in the extra-man situations. Hungary finished second of the group and will play against Ukraine for a ticket to the final eight, while Brazil will face South Africa for the 12th position.
