Long before the start of the match, the swimming pool was already crowded by the Greek supporters, who were waiting for the first home match of their country in the tournament. The atmosphere was electric. From the early beginning, it was clear that the key for the victory was “hidden” behind the defence. The team who played better in front of her goalkeeper would get the win and simultaneously an important advantage for a place in the final eight. Greece having in an excellent day, the best goalkeeper of the previous world championship Chrysoula Diamantopoulou succeeded to block all the attacking weapons of Spain, and could finally celebrate the victory with her teammates.  The first scorer of the game (with three goals) and decisive player for Greece’s win was Eleftheria Plevritou.

The beginning the match was balanced and Italy was the first team to score. However, as the time passed, the USA gained the control of the match and took the advantage having in Rachel Fattal (4 goals) a powerful weapon against the Europeans. Although Italy scored an important goal before the end of the last period, which kept Italian’s hopes alive, nothing changed during the remained minutes and USA almost assured the first place of the group. Key of the match was the weakness of the Italian side on the extra-man situations.

Theoretically an uneventful match, the first game of Group C was exciting with a dramatic end. The two teams went during the entire encounter hand in hand and none of them could build a safe difference. South Africa succeeded to equalize for the first time in the match at the end of the third period. This additional pressure affected the Uzbek side, supposedly the favourite before the initial whistle. As a result, South Africans were more concentrated and by taking the advantage in the last minute, they could celebrate an amazing turnover and enjoy their first points in the tournament. In great shape were Nicole Haird and Kim Rosslee, who scored three goals each.

The evening’s session began with an overwhelming supremacy from one of the favourite teams. On a remake of Monday’s match against South Africa, Australia showed no mercy against Ukraine, achieving the biggest win of the day. The Aussies wanted from the early beginning to make clear who would be the boss of the match and went to the half time being in front with 9-0. In the end, the Australians succeeded another goal galore (Jayde Appel led the team, with four goals), and maintain the best attack of the tournament with 42 goals in two matches.

None of the teams entered the match with the required concentration, although Brazil built an initial difference of three goals being more effective on attack. After that, Brazilians softened their game and Great Britain managed to balance the match. With an amazing comeback they equalized during the last minutes and as a result they celebrated their first point in the tournament. Brazil, on the other side, may still be wondering how they did not win, despite their many chances to close the match in their favour. The most valuable player of the game was Ella Chadderton (GBR), with four goals.

Two really strong teams faced each other and provided one of the best matches in the tournament so far. The game played by the two sides was really beautiful and the rhythm amazing. Until the end of the first half, the match was a real derby with very strong defences. However, Russia seemed to want it more and on the third quarter succeeded to build a difference of three goals, basing their attack in transition. In the last quarter, the Hungarians tried the comeback but it was already too later. After this result, Russia occupies the first place of the group.
