The match was a comfortable “training” for Spain. The Iberians took a huge advantage from the first period (7-1) and just managed this difference until the end of the match. After allowing a balanced (2-2) second quarter, the Spanish players restarted the “turbo” after the halftime and gave no chances of recover to their opponents. The difference on the score allowed both coaches to make many substitutions and use almost all the available players.

The early advantage of USA - 6-0 during the first quarter - was the cause for a really quiet match without much excitement. After the first period, the North Americans slowed down and gave some space and opportunities to their opponents. What followed were two quarters with some balance (2-1 and 3-2), but of course perfectly controlled by USA. In the end, the North Americans proved why they are one of the favourite squads of the tournament, proving that their senior successes begin at junior level.

In the first half of the game, the Italian players were particularly efficient in the attack (8-1), and soon dictated the fate of the encounter. New Zealanders were allowed some relief in the third quarter (3-3), but the difference was already too important to even think on coming back. The Italian win could have been even more expressive if the Europeans could have taken better advantage of the extra-man situations, where they were not so efficient (4/11).

Another match in one-direction, with Australians imposing a double 6-1 in the first two quarters, and annihilating any South African illusion. Thanks to three inspired players (Colenso, Barr and Hedges), who scored 13 of the 20 goals of their team, Australia sealed an important win over South Africa and was able to test many combinations that can be useful during the decisive stages of the tournament. Their amazing 8/10 on extra-man was a precious indication of their offensive strategy and was decisive for this comfortable outcome.

The match started in a certain way balanced, with the Ukrainians refraining the attacks of their opponents (4-1 at halftime). But the third quarter was decisive for the final outcome, with Uzbekistan scoring five goals against none for the Ukrainians. The winners showed a very strong defence, which was able to keep the difference safe and to diminish the success of Ukraine, whose team only scored five goals. From Uzbekistan’s side, Djumalieva was “on fire”, netting more than the half of her squad’s goals (six out of 11).

Very nervous in the defence, the team of Brazil, gave five penalty opportunities to Russia in the first period, and all them resulted in goal for the Europeans. After a balanced second period, three consecutive goals in the third quarter for Russia dictated the winner of this match. The winners were more concentrated throughout the entire match and took better advantage of the opportunities they had. The Brazilians fought well in the first half, but then lost concentration and efficiency and could not avoid nine goals in the last two quarters, when they could not find the opponent’s net.

The Magyar side started very strong, dissipating at halftime (8-2) any doubt to what would be the winner of the match. In the third period (3-3), Hungary softened a bit the pressure and the British squad could find some tranquility, but the outcome of the game was of course sealed. In the end, Hungary dedicated its victory to Dezso Gyarmati, the water polo legend who passed away at the age of 86 and was certainly an inspiration and role model for the younger generations of Magyar water polo players. In the beginning of the encounter, a minute of silence was observed in Gyarmati’s memory.
