Canada 6 – USA 9
(1-2, 2-2, 2-5, 1-0)

The destiny of the title of the 2009 World league was decided in the third period of the USA-Canada final. During a span of two and a half minutes, American players Wenger, Rullon and Gandy scored three goals and preserved their advantage of 7-3. Elizabeth Armstrong, goalkeeper of the American team who deflected some difficult shots during key moments of the final, performed perfectly.

Adam Krikorian, head coach of the national team of USA: “I am proud of our team. Today we demonstrated a fine game in defense that determined the outcome of this game. And why am I dry till now? It is accepted for our team to bathe a coach in the water after victories in only two tournaments – the Olympic Games and the World Championships.”

Patrick Oaten, head coach of the Canadian team: “The national team of the USA played very well, and we did not use our chances. This was partly due to the fact that in the third period we have played incorrectly.”

Canada: Riddell, Alogbo (2), Monton, Csikos, Bekhazi (1), Genoway, Tomiuk, Perreault (1), Eggens, Robinson (1), Campbell (1), M.Eggens, Janssens.

USA: Armstrong, Petri (1), Hayes, Villa, Wenger (2), Gandy (3), Rullon (2), Steffens, Windes, Gregorka, Silver, Craig, Dries (1).

Spain 8 – Australia 12
(4-4, 1-3, 2-2, 1-3)

In the line-up of the Spanish there was for various reasons an absence of three players that compose the team’s basic structure – Aller and Pareja because of traumas, and Meseguer went home the day before for the personal reasons. In their absence, the team of Spain began their game perfectly (3-0 in the 3rd minute), but couldn’t do more. Already by the end of the second period Australia not only levelled the score, but advanced, and in the final quarter their victory was obvious.

Jane Giralt Joan, head coach of the Spanish team: “Against such a strong team as the national team of Australia, it is difficult to play even with full line-up. We had to play without the strongest players of our team. Meseguer had to go home for study. In such a case I consider that sport is just sport, but life is more important.”

Greg McFadden, head coach of the Australian team: “We are glad to win bronze, having therefore repeated our result of the Super Final in Kirishi four years ago. It is always difficult to prepare a team for the 3rd place game as we expected to appear in the main final game. But I am grateful to the players for entering the game with excellent motivation.”

Spain: Del Soto, Gil (3), Ortiz, Hagen, Lopez-Escribano, C.Lopez (2), Pena, Garcia, L.Lopez (2), Dominech (1), Ester.

Australia: McCormack, Lincoln-Smith, Ralph, R.Rippon, Moran (1), Knox (4), Webster (1), Gynter (2), Mills (1), Dessauvagie, M.Rippon (3), Arancini, Brown.

Russia 9 – China 10
(1-4, 3-2, 2-1, 3-3)

A failure of the host mistresses at the end of the first period, when the Russian national team allowed four successive Chinese goals, also determined further developments in this game. For most of the game the Russian team tried to catch-up, and could overtake their opponents only six minutes until the final siren after two successive goals by Olga Belyaeva. However, in a dramatic ending good luck smiled on the Chinese women – a goal by Sun Yating was decisive, 30 seconds before the end, after which the score became 10-8 in favour of the Chinese.

Alexander Kabanov, head coach of the Russian team: “While we are ready for 70 per cent of possibilities, to tell the truth I did not expect that this tournament would be so difficult, and our rivals were too well-prepared. I think that the teams of USA, Canada, Australia and China played in Kirishi with maximum capabilities.”

Pan ShengHua, head coach of the Chinese national team: “We are grateful to the Russian national team. In 2007 year we came to Kirishi to study and adopt tactical improvements, and now twice we won over the hosts. But all the same I consider the Russian national team the strongest team in the world and I think that good luck was on our side.”

Russia: Vorontsova, Glyzina (1), Prokofyeva, Konukh (2), Ryzhiva-Alenicheva, Kuryatnikova, Pantyulina (1), Soboleva, Timofeeva (1), Belyaeva (3), Ivanova, Gaufler, Vylegzhanina (1).

China: Yang Jun, Zhang Cong, Liu Ping, Sun Yujun, He Jin, Sun Yating (4), Song DongLun, Gao Ao (2), Wang Yi, Ma HuanHuan (3), Sun Huizi, Qiao LeiYing (1), Wang Ying.

Greece 13 – Italy 6
(3-0, 2-3, 4-1, 4-2)

The Greek national team, which played with an absence of Antigoni Roumpesi because of injury, started their game confidently, and during the first quarter they achieved an appreciable advantage. In the second period the Italian team tried to introduce changes to the game course, but could reduce their goal difference only to a minimum and only for a short time. And in the third quarter, the Greek national team made decisive steps and then finished the game with a victory.

Konstantinos Petrakis, coach of the Greek team: “We played another game without Roumpesi – she has a strong bruise to a finger, and it requires ten days to get better. Both teams were quite tired as it was the 6th game in six days. It affected the game very much.”

Roberto Fiori, head coach of the Italian team: “Today's game is our shame! We played some not so good games for this tournament in Kirishi, but today's – worst of all. The weariness because of such a schedule affects us, of course, but a schedule that is common for everybody cannot be excuse.”
