Lausanne (SUI), September 13, 2010 – Brazilian swimmers were in evidence at the first meet of the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup 2010, taking place in Rio de Janeiro from September 10-12. The local stars got 16 out of the 34 titles at stake, while swimmers from Japan and Sweden were also in great shape.
Among women, Brazil won five gold medals (Tatiana Barbosa, with two, and Joanna Maranhao, with three), but Sweden appeared as the most prolific nation, with six titles (three to Therese Alshammar, who was also the best female performer of the meet in the 100m butterfly, and three to her teammate Joline Hoestman, who won all the breaststroke events). Japan was also quite successful, with two victories for Sakiko Nakamura and three triumphs for Miyuki Takemura. The last gold in the women’s races went to Hinkelien Schreuder (NED) in the 100m individual medley.
In the men’s field, the Brazilian supremacy was impressive, with 11 victories – the hero of the meet was Thiago Pereira, with four gold medals – 200m free, and the three medley events. In the 200m IM, Pereira established the best performance of the competition, with 969 points (for a time of 1:52.72). The 1000-point value corresponds to the World Record in each event. Cesar Cielo triumphed in the 50m and 100m free, while his teammate Felipe Silva was the best in the 50m and 100m breaststroke. Guilherme Guido (100m back), Leonardo de Deus (200m fly) and Lucas Kanieski (BRA) were the remaining winners from the host country.
Two Japanese swimmers also got victories among men – Kenichi Doki in the 400m free and Kazuki Otsuka in the 200m breaststroke -, Steffen Deibler (GER) triumphed in the 50m and 100m butterfly, Randall Bal (USA) got the gold in the 50m backstroke and Arkady Vyatchanin (RUS) won the 200m backstroke.
