21 World Junior Records were established at the sixth edition of the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships, held in Indianapolis (USA) from August 23-28, 2017, while many young talents were discovered in the iconic Indiana University Natatorium Swimming Pool on the campus of IUPUI.
In addition, 45 Championship Records fell during the six-day competition which gathered 618 athletes representing 90 National Federations.
Rikako Ikee of Japan received the FINA Trophy for the best female swimmer of the meet. She won three individual gold medals in the 50m freestyle and the 50m and 100m butterfly events.
Winner of the men’s FINA Trophy for top male swimmer of the meet, Michael Andrew (USA) won five individual medals in Indianapolis, including three gold, and set three junior world records. He earned gold in the men’s 50m back, 50m fly and 50m free, as well bronze in the 50m and 100m breast.
Ireland got its first ever medal at the World Junior Championships, with Mona McSharry's victory in the 100m breaststroke (1:07.10) on Saturday evening.
Argentina's Delfina Pignatellio showed dominance in the female distance (1500m) event by winning the gold in 15:59.51. She also took gold in the 800m and a silver in the 400m events. Andrew Abruzzo of the USA topped the men's 1500m event, clocking a time of 15:06.48.
Hugo Gonzalez (ESP) left the Championships with three gold and a silver medals (gold in 100/200m back and 400m IM, and silver in the 50m back).

Throughout the six-day competition a total of 1009.75km were swum across the 42 events, while 18 countries have medalled.
