Synchronised swimming teams from around the world competed in the FINA Synchronised Swimming Olympic Games Qualification Tournament at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre in Rio de Janeiro (BRA), from March 2-6, 2016. The tournament doubled up as a test event for the Rio 2016 Olympics.
A total of 30 nations* took part in the tournament. Three teams secured a spot for the Olympic team events, while another five teams, including the host nation, had already earned their place at the continental level. In addition, 24 duets are now qualified for the Games.
On Sunday, the last competition day, strong nations Ukraine (186.7855) and Japan (186.7330) won gold and silver respectively in the team event, earning the first two available tickets to Rio 2016, while Italy claimed bronze with 181.7487.
The eight teams which secured a spot for the Olympic team event are: Brazil (host nation + representing the American continent), Russia (European spot), China (Asian spot), Australia (Oceania spot), Egypt (African spot), Ukraine (gold at the tournament), Japan (silver at the tournament) and Italy (bronze at the tournament).
Following the two duet rounds in Rio on Wednesday March 2 and Sunday March 6, the duets qualified for the Olympic Games are: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Egypt, FINA, France, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Israel, Japan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine and USA.
All qualified teams and duets are subject to their NOC/NF confirmation to FINA that they will use their allocation quota place by April 15.
