Greatest Olympian of all time Michael Phelps was recognised last night in Monaco at the Laureus Awards Gala.

Phelps won the Comeback of the Year award for his remarkable come back and achievements at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Phelps, who retired from professional swimming in August, has earned a total of 28 Olympic medals throughout his career which started at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

In all, the 28 medals include 23 gold, three silver and two bronze

Athens 2004: Six gold, two bronz

Beijing 2008: Eight gold

London 2012: Four gold, two silver

Rio 2016: Five gold, one silver

Phelps was nominated for the award alongside Fabienne St Louis (triathlon), Juan Martín del Potro (tennis), Nick Skelton (equestrian) and Ruth Beitia (athletics).
