FINA learnt with immense sadness about the loss of Chuck Wielgus, USA Swimming Executive Director for the last 20 years. At 67, this brilliant administrator has lost a long and brave fight against cancer.

During his tenure at USA Swimming, Chuck Wielgus was pivotal in the success of the US National Teams at the Olympic Games and FINA World Championships, where they were constantly in the top of the world hierarchy. Under his management, the number of affiliated swimmers has dramatically increased and by launching various development programmes he decisively contributed to the raise of mass participation and popularity of the Sport in the US territory.

Several times awarded by the US sport authorities for his accomplishments, the FINA family will keep from him an image of efficiency, humility, devotion to Swimming and respect for the athletes’ rights.

In a letter addressed to Chuck Wielgus’ family, FINA wrote: “We know he was a fantastic husband and a great father, leading a successful and happy family. He was an example for our Sport, and he will surely remain an inspiration for you. We all know about the fruitful outcome of his career within USA Swimming, but in this painful time we all recall the passionate man about Sport, the optimism of his personality and the enthusiasm applied to all his actions”.

In this moment of grief, FINA presents its heartfelt condolences to Chuck Wielgus’ family and friends as well as to the entire US swimming community.
