PR 4 - WPWL: Croatia, France, Greece and Montenegro, first winners in 2020

Croatia, France, Greece and Montenegro were the winners in the first 2020 round of the European preliminaries of the FINA Men’s Water Polo World League, after four matches contested on February 11.

In Tbilisi, playing for Group A, Georgia received Greece, but could not overcome the Hellenic strength, losing by 7-19. The visitors controlled operations throughout the entire match, with partials of 5-1, 4-2, 5-3 and 5-1 in their favour. On the winning side, Angelos Vlachopoulos was the most prolific scorer, with four goals.

PR 3 – CSS 2020: Beijing inspires stars from 21 nations

Athletes from China and Japan were in great shape in the second and last leg of the 2020 edition of the FINA Champions Swim Series, taking place in Beijing (CHN) on January 18-19. The local stars, as with the first stop of the circuit in Shenzhen (CHN, January 14-15), left the Ying Dong Natatorium venue of the Chinese capital with nine titles, while the hosts of this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo earned five gold medals.

PR 2 – CSS 2020: China shows its strength in Shenzhen

Chinese swimmers were in excellent shape in the first leg of the 2020 edition of the FINA Champions Swim Series, organised in Shenzhen (CHN) on January 14-15, winning nine gold medals out of the 28 individual events in the programme. The swimming stars now travel to Beijing (CHN), where the second leg of the competition takes place on January 18-19. Overall, 70 swimmers are participating in the event, totalling 59 Olympic and 163 World Championships’ medals.

PR 1 - CSS 2020: Swimming stars ready to shine in Shenzhen (CHN)

Swimming stars are arriving and already training in the Shenzhen Universiade Center Swimming Natatorium, the venue of the first leg of the 2020 FINA Champions Swim Series, to be staged in January 14-15 in the Chinese southern metropolis. For this year’s edition of FINA’s successful event, the entry list comprises 70 athletes – 41 among men and 29 in the women’s events -, a strong field totalling 59 Olympic and 163 Championships’ medals. The second meet of the competition will take place in Beijing (CHN), on January 18-19.

FINA IN MOURNING - Eugenio Martinez (CUB)

Six-time Olympic referee Eugenio Martinez of Cuba has passed away on December 25, 2019 leaving a huge hole in the worldwide water polo community. We have lost another great to the game.

A former FINA Bureau member (2013-17) and four-time FINA Technical Water Polo Committee member (2000-2013, 2017-19), Eugenio was an affable, yet stern, personality whose control of water polo matches was legendary.

PR 97 - WP: Greece beats Serbia for the gold in Kuwait City

The team of Greece won the gold medal of the 2019 edition of the FINA World Men’s Junior Water Polo Championships, staged between December 12-20 in Kuwait City (KUW). In the decisive game, the Hellenic team defeated the Serbian squad by 6-4, thus revalidating the 2017 world crown. In the bronze-medal match, Italy beat Croatia by 9-6.

The winners of the tournament started the final in the best possible way, managing a 2-0 advantage in the first quarter. This proved decisive throughout the match, as the remaining three periods were perfectly balanced (1-1, 0-0 and 3-3).

2019 FINA General Survey

FINA conducted and concluded a gigantic survey to assess the state of aquatics around the world. Based on the data supplied by the national federations, some significant findings have been presented. Perhaps the most wonderful statistic is the number of registered aquatic athletes in the world - almost 35 million. They can swim in more than 90,000 pools – besides the natural waters of course.

FINA IN MOURNING – Chief Olatokunbo Thomas (NGR)

FINA learnt with great sadness about the recent loss of its Honorary Member, Chief Olatokunbo Thomas, from Nigeria. Chief Thomas was 76 and passed away after a short illness.

After serving FINA as a distinguished member of its Swimming Technical Committee, Chief Thomas was elected to the FINA Bureau in 2000 and remained in this role until 2013. From then, he was a FINA Honorary Member.

A prestigious lawyer in his country, Chief Thomas had a pivotal role in the development of Swimming and Aquatics in Nigeria and greatly contributed to the progress of our Sport in Africa.

PR 96 - FINA Bureau Meeting in Kuwait City (KUW)

Some hours before the official opening of the 20th FINA World Men’s Junior Water Polo Championships, to be staged in Kuwait City (KUW) from December 12-20, the FINA Bureau held its last 2019 meeting. Under the presidency of Dr Julio C. Maglione, the main highlights of the gathering were:

-Approval of the standard qualifying times for the 2020 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Abu Dhabi (UAE), and the 2021 FINA World Championships in Fukuoka (JPN);

-Approval of the Swimming and Diving Technical Officials for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games;
