FC Porto and Diogo Carvalho, the best in Winter Nationals

A top-class Futebol Clube do Porto as a team, and Diogo Carvalho individually were simply the best at the recent Portuguese Winter Championships (short course) in the ancient city of Leiria (129 km north of Lisbon).

From December 4-6, most of the best Portuguese swimmers gathered to the first national event of the season, without the presence of many valuable swimmers such as Simão Morgado, Pedro Oliveira, Carlos Almeida and Tiago Venâncio, in a meet where the club from the North of the country demonstrated its supremacy: 12 gold - 8 silver - 8 bronze medals, a total of 28, way far from Sporting (Lisbon) with 5-7-8, total of 20, but with more national records (counting all ages).

Corinthians wins the 15-16 years old Brazilian Championship

The Sport Club Corinthians Paulista won the Brazilian 15-16 years old Swimming Championship (the Carlos Campos Sobrinho Trophy). The club scored 344 points. Minas Tênis Clube finished the event in the second position with 303 points and Unisanta was third with 255 points. Overall, 24 new event records were set in this competition. The championship was held at the Curitibano club in the city of Curitiba.

Cheng becomes surprise winner as China tops Asian swimming championships

CHNSlicing three seconds off personal best within one month, Chinese Taipei's Cheng Wan Jun stunned to win the women's 200 meters individual medley title of the last day at the 8th Asian Swimming Championships on Foshan (CHN) on Nov. 28.   

After the eight-day Asian championships, the hosts swept 46 golds in swimming, diving and synchronised swimming.

Olympic champion Liu Zige to shine in Asian swimming championships

Federations News

Olympic champion Liu Zige and world champion Zhang Lin will lead a group of Chinese elite swimmers at the Asian Swimming Championships which ran through Nov. 21-28.

The Championships, which include swimming, synchronised swimming and diving, are being held by China Swimming Association (CSA), Guangdong Provincial Sports Administration and People's Municipal Government of Foshan, under the auspices of the Asia Swimming Federation (AASF).

Junya Koga, "Swimmer of the Year" in Japan

The national annual meeting of Japan Swimming Federation for November was held in Tokyo on November 22. On that occasion the “Swimmer of the year” award was announced: Junya Koga, men’s 100m backstroke gold medallist at the 13th FINA World Championships Rome 2009.

Also in Japan, Kousuke Kitajima, gold medallist in the men’s 100m and 200m breaststroke both in the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olymopics, came back to the swimming pool after the Beijing Olympic Games. He enjoyably swam at the Tokyo Swimming Center Invitational Meet, which was held on November 21-23, 2009.
