Open water swimmers take the plunge in Japan
The Oiso Long Beach 10km Open Water Swimming Championships were held in a lazy river (i.e. artificially created water current) at the Oiso Prince Hotel in Kanagawa-ken, Japan, on July 4, 2010. Swimmers had to complete a rectangular 500-meter long closed-circuit loop twenty times, counter-clockwise and without turns (two length sides being 250-meter long and two width sides 10-meter long each).
SPEEDO swimmers combine efforts to fight malaria
Thousands of Speedo swimmers, including 14-time Olympic champion, Michael Phelps, have helped combat the spread of malaria in Africa by teaming up to raise an astonishing 193,647USD as part of World Swim Against Malaria on June 25, 2010.
Phelps and fellow Olympic Gold medallist Rebecca Adlington were among the 9,917 athletes, staff and friends of the world’s leading swimwear brand who took to the pool to raise money to purchase vital bed nets offering defence against malaria-carrying mosquitoes, ensuring that 76,322 children will be protected from what remains one of the world’s most deadly diseases.
As well as raising much needed funds for World Swim Against Malaria, the efforts of Speedo swimmers also amounted to a total distance of over 40,074km - the equivalent total distance of a round the world swim.
Busy July ahead for Japan
All Japan National Teams (Swimming, Diving, Water Polo, Synchronised Swimming and Open Water Swimming) are busy preparing for their July schedule. The swimming national team, with – just to name some – Kosuke Kitajima, Junya Koga, Ryosuke Irie, Takeshi Matsuda, Shiho Sakai, Aya Terakawa, Marie Kamimura and Rino Hosoda, counts 49 swimmers, who are training hard for the upcoming the Pan Pacific Championships to be held in California (USA) on August 17-21, 2010.
Ivan Garcia proud flag bearer at Singapore Youth Olympic Games
The Mexican Swimming Federation announced that the diver Ivan Garcia will be the flag bearer representing Mexico at the Youth Olympic Games, in Singapore this August. This designation acknowledges the work and talent of Ivan Garcia, who is considered a rising diving star in Mexico.
Ivan García’s pet event is the 10m platform; he performs dives of a high degree of difficulty and his main results have been internationally awarded in platform synchro with German Sanchez, who participated in the FINA World Championships in Rome 2009 and the 2010 FINA Diving World Cup in China. He was also a silver medallist at the third meet of the FINA/Li-Ning Diving World Series 2010 in Veracruz.
Emotive posthumous tribute to Joaquín Capilla, four-time Olympic medallist
Mexican Olympic Committee President (COM), Felipe Muñoz Kapamas, Director of the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports (Conade), Bernardo de la Garza, and President of the Mexican Swimming Federation, Todorov Kiril Minchev, were all present to pay posthumous tribute to Mexican diver Joaquin Capilla, who passed away on May 8, 2010, in Mexico City.
Mexico will defend swimming title at Central American and Caribbean Games
Twenty-six Mexican swimmers (12 women and 14 men) will defend the championships title at the Central American and Caribbean Games to be held at Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, in July.
In the editions of San Salvador 2002 and Cartagena 2006, Mexico won 15 gold medals in swimming (long course) competitions and was superior to other countries in the region such as Venezuela, Colombia, Puerto Rico and Cuba.
The Mexican team is getting ready by taking part in several international competitions. For example, Patricia Castañeda, double silver medallist at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2007, and Fernanda Gonzalez participated in the Mare Nostrum meet in Barcelona (ESP) and Canet (FRA).
Mexico successful at the Loano Synchro Cup
Mexico gained one silver and three bronze medals at the Loano Synchronised Swimming Cup. The event was part of the Mexican team’s preparation for the upcoming Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
Italy dominated the Team event competition, finishing first with 94.667 points. Brazil was second with 90.167 and Mexico third with 87.833.
In the Duet event, the Italians Giulia Lapi and Manila Flamini accumulated a total of 93.167 points, winning the gold. The Brazilian duo Nayara Figueira and Lara Teixeira took silver with a total of 89.833 points, while the Mexican pair Isabel Diosdado and Nuria Delgado, who will represent the colours of their country at the 2012 Olympic Games, claimed the bronze, totalling 86.667.
Switzerland - Lausanne Natation - Head Coach wanted
Lausanne Natation, a well-established Swiss synchronized swimming club with a successful track record in competitions, has a Head Coach position opening in September 2010.
The successful candidate for this paid position will be an individual with a strong background in synchronized swimming, have leadership qualities, and have good interpersonal and organizational skills. Sound knowledge of French is a pre-requisite, length of contract 2 years minimum.
Pellegrini offers her club its fifth "Scudetto"
For the fourth year in-a-row, the Aniene Rowing Club won the Italian club championships. Rome’s most prestigious club dragged by an explosive Federica Pellegrini (winner of the 200 and 400 freestyle), who recently gave up the 200 freestyle at the Seven Hills meet in order to be fresh and bright for this event, takes home her fifth “Scudetto”, beating the Ispra Swim Planet from Brembilla and Marin (absent for a minor knee injury) and Larus Swimming of a fierce Filippo Magnini (winner of the 100 and 200 freestyle), dragging his team especially in the crucial relay.
Seven Hills, Day 3: Sullivan shines in the 100 freestyle, upsetting a "reborn" Magnini
During the closing day of the Seven Hills meet, which gives the trophy to Italy, Eamon Sullivan (AUS), who is training at the Australian Intitute of Sport (AIS) of Varese (ITA), won the most anticipated race of the programme: the Aussie, already world record holder, imposed himself in 49.25, rejecting the attacks of a “reborn” Filippo Magnini. Dunford (KEN) completed the podium.
