Brazil third behind USA and Cuba at Pan Am Games
The Brazilian delegation bagged 30 medals (ten golds, nine silvers and 11 bronze) from the Pan American Games which concluded on October 30 in Guadalajara (MEX). The squad was reinforced by the presence of swimming aces Cesar Cielo and Thiago Pereira. Olympic champion Cielo won four gold medals. He notably took out the 100m freestyle in 47.84, the season's second best time. Team-mate Pereira won eight medals, thus becoming Brazil's most decorated athlete at the Games with a total 12 gold medals.
In open water, Poliana Okimoto repeated her silver medal from Rio (2007) while the men's and women's water polo teams both won the bronze against Cuba. Brazil's synchro team finished third in both the duet and team free and Cesar Castro was the only Brazilian diver to pick up a medal (bronze) in the 3m springboard competition.
José Mourinho will be the Ambassador of the “FINA Olympic Marathon Swim Qualifier”
The President of the Portuguese Swimming Federation (and FINA Bureau Member) Paulo Frischknecht was on October 27, 2011 in Madrid (ESP) to meet José Mourinho, the coach of the local football club Real Madrid, who will be the Ambassador of the “FINA Olympic Marathon Swim Qualifier”, to be held on June 9-10, 2012 in the Portuguese city of Setubal. Frischknecht was accompanied by the Mayor of Setubal, Maria das Dores Meira, and gave to Mourinho the official shirt of the competition. This event will complete the list of the 25 men and 25 women eligible to compete at the 10km Marathon Swimming races at the 2012 Olympic Games in London (GBR).
Ryan Lochte behind Barcelona 2013
On his first visit to Barcelona, the world’s number one swimmer in 2011 has offered his support for the 2013 World Championships. He is the first swimmer to break a world record without the aid of a high tech swimsuit. While he prepares for London 2012, another big event appears on the horizon: Barcelona 2013.
Olympic 200m backstroke champion, US-American Ryan Lochte, has offered his support for the 15th FINA World Championships Barcelona 2013 during a short stay in the Catalan capital last weekend. The top swimmer from Gainesville, Florida, got to Barcelona on Friday for a meeting with one of his sponsors and returned to the United States yesterday.
USA and Brazil put up a good show at Pan Am Games
Team USA confirmed they are the favourites in the swimming events for the XVI Pan American Games currently taking place in Guadalajara, Mexico. But USA's strongest rival Brazil is also determined to steal the show in the pool. Thousands of fans filled the stands at the Aquatic Complex which will also host the FINA World Championships in 2017.
Brazilians Thiago Pereira and Cesar Cielo were most certainly up for the gold but in each race they entered, they had to contend with the likes of the Americans. Thiago Pereira competed in eight events and won medals in all of them (six golds, a silver and a bronze), repeating his feat from four years ago in Rio de Janeiro (BRA). His participation in Guadalajara made him the Brazilian athlete with the most gold medals at a Pan American Games. The talented swimmer has collected 11 medals since his first podium. Brazilian star Cesar Cielo won four gold medals, improving his performance from 2007 where he bagged three golds and one silver. Cielo was the fastest in the 50m freestyle, touching the wall in 21.58.
Canada's best divers set for 2011 Pan American Games
Just one week prior to the start of the diving events at the 2011 Pan American Games, in Guadalajara, Mexico, the Canadian diving team is focused on closing out the pre-Olympic year on a winning note.
“Diving Plongeon Canada has selected its strongest team possible to compete in Guadalajara,” says DPC high performance director, Scott Cranham. “All the divers we are sending to the Pan American Games competed earlier this year at the FINA World Championships and are serious contenders to make our Olympic team for London.”

Huegill and co fly out to Stockholm
The 32-year-old Huegill and world championship 100m freestyle relay gold medallists Eamon Sullivan and Matthew Abood will contest all three European legs of the FINA World Cup in Stockholm (15-16 October), Moscow (18-19 October) and Berlin (22-23 October) and left Sydney today bound for Sweden.
Canadian swimmers kick-start the Olympic season at FINA World Cups
Several of Canada’s big names in swimming will have an early start to the season with some fast racing as they head to Europe this month to compete on the FINA World Cup circuit.
World Championships silver medallist in the 100 freestyle, Brent Hayden of Mission, BC and national teammates Mike Brown, Perth ON, Annamay Pierse, Edmonton AB, Erica Morningstar, Calgary Alta., and 17 year-old Chantal van Landeghem of Winnipeg, MB are amongst Canada’s Olympic hopefuls that will be racing in Stockholm (15-16), Moscow (18-19) and Berlin (22-23).
Sao Paulo wins Chico Piscina Trophy
The team from São Paulo state won again the traditional Chico Piscina Trophy, which comprises the Brazilian Interfederation Youth Championships and International Youth Championships. São Paulo won in both categories (international and national) for the 11th consecutive year. The national championships are contested by the state Federations of Brazil while the international championships are disputed by teams from other countries that are invited. This year Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Peru took part in the event. In all, 375 swimmers forming 22 teams attended the event. Four new records were set in the competition that took place at the Mocoquense club in the city of Mococa (BRA).
Rahael, Gillette win Maracas 5k Swim
National Swimmers and Marlins Athletes Samantha Rahael and Jonathan Gillette emerged the victors in 5000m swim at the ASATT Maracas Open Water Swim Classic at Maracas Bay on Sunday.
Rahael who is based in the USA won on her debut in the Maracas 5k race and topped the female field to win in 1 hour 12 minutes and 32 seconds dethroning last year’s champion Theana Hay of Centre of Excellence Sea Hawks (1:16:04).
