The new SMC member

Dr. Kevin BoydA new SMC member has been appointed by the FINA Bureau after the sad loss of Professor Ioan Dragan who died in March 2010 at the age of 80. Prof. Dragan was former President of the Romanian Society of Sports Medicine and contributed to the FINA SMC for more than 40 years, receiving the FINA Gold Pin in 1986.

The new SMC member, Dr Kevin Boyd, is a Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon and Head of the Sport & Exercise Medicine at the University Hospitals of Leicester, England.

World Swim against Malaria

After supporting the project on its launch in 2005, FINA is once more associated to the “World Swim Against Malaria”, a global initiative to bring swimmers together, in order to raise money to fight malaria. The aim is to achieve one million people swimming on the same day all around the world, on June 25, 2010.

Anti-Doping Update

FINA continues to demonstrate leadership in anti-doping strategies and all aquatic athletes are reminded of their responsibility to keep our sport free from drug misuse.

The education of athletes, coaches and support staff is an ongoing responsibility and the FINA website with links to WADA, provides updates on all anti-doping matters including the List of Prohibited Substances and the procedure to apply for Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).

FINA SMC Terms of Reference

As the meeting in Lausanne in December 2009 was the first meeting of the new FINA SMC, a review was conducted of the purpose and activities of the SMC.  The following is a summary of the Vision, Mission Statement and Terms of Reference which will serve to guide the SMC in the upcoming 4 years of service.

FINA Sports Medicine Committee (SMC) Meeting in Lausanne

The new SMC held its first meeting on the 5th and 6th December 2009 at the FINA office in Lausanne, Switzerland.  The most important points covered in this meeting included: revision of the FINA SMC terms of reference, the next FINA Sports Medicine Congress which will be held in Istanbul 2012, Aquatic Sports Medicine courses certified by FINA, changes in the Aquatic World Magazine and also the next meeting with team physicians on the occasion of the Swimming World Championships. In addition, the results of the FINA Injury & Illness Prevention Project were reviewed and prevention programs were planned.  Some of these subjects will be discussed in future editions of newsletter.

FINA Aquatic Research Update: Rome 2009 FINA Injury & Illness Prevention Project

The results of the FINA Injury & Illness prevention project have been analyzed and preliminary results have been reported previously (FINA Aquatics Magazine 2009 and FINA Newsletter #3).  A scientific paper has been written summarizing the results which will appear in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in the March 2010 edition.
