Open Water Swimming Safety

A new research project of the FINA SMC is a survey of Open Water Swimming (OWS) events conducted under the auspices of FINA. This survey, to be distributed at the technical meetings of FINA OWS events addresses illness prevalence and requires the cooperation of coaches and athletes. FINA TUE Program: 2009 Requirements

In 2008 at the FINA Extraordinary Congress in Manchester, FINA adopted new anti-doping rules. These Anti-doping rules are based on the new WADA Code which was adopted at the 3rd World Conference in Madrid in 2008. Athlete’s Whereabouts

Another change in the FINA Anti-Doping Rules is the requirements for athlete’s whereabouts for those athletes in FINA’s registered testing pool. Those athletes identified by FINA in the registered testing pool are required to submit their whereabouts information quarterly to FINA. In addition to the usual information regarding training schedules and living/work/school arrangements, the athlete must identify a 1 hour period per day between 0600 and 2300h where he or she can be found. If the athlete is not available during this predetermined 1 hour time slot, a ‘missed test’ is filed. An anti-doping rule violation is considered to have occurred if the athlete has three ‘missed tests’ in an 18 month period and/or failure to file whereabouts information. This anti-doping rule violation can result in a 1-2 year sanction. Under the new FINA Anti-Doping Rules, Member Federations are responsible to assist with the collection of athletes’ whereabouts information. Failure of the Member Federations to comply may result in a financial sanction of up to $1000 per athlete.
