Preventing Injuries in Water Polo, another presentation from IOC World Conference on Injury and Illness Prevention

As reviewed in previous edition of FINA SMC Newsletter, FINA Sports Medicine Committee had a significant collaboration with IOC-Medical Commission to provide a series of workshops on Injury Prevention in Aquatic Sports.

Update on WADA Prohibited List 2012

Members of the Anti-Doping Community should be aware that careful consideration has been given to all of the thoughtful comments that have been provided in response to the distribution of the draft 2012 List. It will be recognized that not all suggestions have been accepted or incorporated into the 2012 List but, as is explained below, modifications to the draft have been made possible because of the contributions and submissions of many of our colleagues.

Shanghai 2011 OC holds meeting with Food Safety Experts

The Organising Committee of the 14th FINA World Championships had a meeting with food safety experts on the morning of April 26, 2011. After hearing the OC’s introduction of the general food safety plan and relevant measures, as well as food-borne doping prevention measures, the experts were reassured that all aspects of food safety were complete and efficient. In particular the principle of preventing contamination at source and strict food-borne doping prevention measures are effective.

OWS GP 2011: Sumidero Canyon Event cancelled

This decision has been reached following the recommendation of the FINA Sports Medicine Committee, based on the water quality and concerns for the health and safety of competitors. Host committees responsible for OWS events are obligated to ensure that the water quality at the venue meets acceptable standards, confirmed by local Public Health certification.

Dive, Swim, Score, Perform: How to prevent injury & illness in the aquatic disciplines

FINA conducted injury surveillance on water polo in 2004 at the Olympic Games, and all FINA disciplines in 2008 Olympic Games.  A similar survey was conducted in 2009 at the FINA World Championships.
This lecture reviews the statistics of the injuries as well as common causes of them by discipline.

WADA Medical Update

1) The draft WADA 2012 List of Prohibited Substances has been distributed to stakeholder groups for review in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code. A coordinated response on behalf of the FINA Doping Control Review Board and the Sports Medicine Committee is currently being prepared.
