FINA Sports Medicine Committee visits Barcelona 2013 headquarters

Only four months ahead of the inauguration of the 15th FINA World Championships Barcelona 2013, event organisers have welcomed another group of people to the headquarters at the main competition venue Palau Sant Jordi. This week, the Sports Medicine Committee of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) is visiting the sports facilities to get an update on the project.

The long workday on Monday started off with a visit to the different competition venues (Palau Sant Jordi, Picornell Pool, Montjuïc Municipal Pool and Moll de la Fusta) and continued with several meetings, focusing on two key areas of the Barcelona 2013 World Championships: Medical Services and Doping Control.

Water Polo draws allow great promotion of Barcelona 2013

The water polo teams participating in the 15th FINA World Championships, to be held from July 19-August 4, 2013 in Barcelona (ESP) know already their opponents in the preliminary round of both the men’s and women’s tournaments. The draw for the competition took today place in the studios of TVE (the host broadcaster of the championships) in Sant Cugat (near the Catalan capital) and was broadcasted live in all the Spanish territory. The normally not-so interesting ceremony was this time an excellent opportunity to promote the championships and to give an appetizer to all those that intend to watch FINA’s major competition, either on site or in the TV screen.

Besides the draw (results can be found here), the one-hour ceremony presented all the six FINA disciplines included in the programme – for the first in Barcelona, High Diving (27m for men and 20m for women) will be part of the World Championships celebration – and interviewed many of the Spanish stars that are actively preparing for the event.

Mayor of Barcelona receives the FINA Family

In the spectacular scenario of the Albeniz Palace, the Mayor of Barcelona Xavier Trias received the FINA Bureau members on February 22 and transmitted them his conviction on a great competition next July, with the occasion of the 15th FINA World Championships.

“The city of Barcelona looks forward to receiving the best aquatic athletes of the world. These Championships is certainly a great investment for our city, but will bring long-lasting effects to Barcelona. I just recall the urban metamorphosis generated by the staging of the 1992 Olympic Games in the city”, considered Xavier Trias, who was accompanied by Maite Fandos, co-president of the Barcelona 2013 FINA World Championships Organising Committee and responsible for Sport in the City Municipality.

FINA President Maglione: “We all feel at home in Barcelona!”

Before the two-day meeting of the FINA Bureau in Barcelona (ESP), on February 22-23, the FINA President Dr. Julio Maglione met the media in the Catalan capital to share his view of the present status of preparation of the 15th FINA World Championships, taking place from July 19 to August 4. Accompanied by Maite Fandos, co-president of the Organising Committee and responsible for Sport in the Barcelona municipality, and by Cornel Marculescu, FINA Executive Director, the FINA President expressed his optimism: “Everything is running in accordance with the timeline. We are very happy to be back in Barcelona, a city that organised a memorable edition of the Olympic Games in 1992 and an outstanding edition of our World Championships, precisely 10 years ago, in 2003”.

Highlighting the quality and excellence of all the competition venues, Dr. Maglione also underlined the natural characteristics of the city: “People are very friendly, Barcelona is quite an exciting city, with excellent cuisine and many interesting places to visit. We all feel at home in Barcelona!”

Draw of Barcelona 2013 Water Polo Tournaments to be held at TV Espanola Studios

The draw of the Barcelona 2013 Water Polo tournaments will be the conclusion of a productive two-day meeting in the Catalan capital, putting an end to the FINA Bureau Meeting (22 and 23 February). Only five months ahead of the 15th FINA World Championships Barcelona 2013, FINA members will mainly focus on the presentation of the updated report for the upcoming major sporting event.

Only one day later, on Sunday, 24 February, the men’s and women’s water polo tournaments of the Barcelona 2013 World Championships will be drawn. Making good use of his visit to the Catalan capital, FINA president Dr. Julio C. Maglione will chair the draw, which will be held at TV Espanola’s Studio 6 in Sant Cugat del Valles.

Barcelona 2013 reaches milestone of 4,000 volunteer registrations

More than 4,000 people that seek to become a volunteer at Barcelona 2013 have already signed up for the 15th FINA World Championships. The milestone was reached today, proving the great interest helpers have in becoming part of the major sporting event, which is one of the biggest international sporting events to be held this upcoming summer. The 15th FINA World Championships Barcelona 2013 will be take place from 19 July to 4 August, featuring six aquatic sports during 16 days of competition.

The volunteer recruitment campaign kicked off on 11 September 2012. In less than five months, expectations of event organisers regarding the number of volunteers have been surpassed. Initially, Barcelona 2013 organisers estimated a number of 3,000 volunteers to be necessary to cover the event.

Americas water polo tournament to decide last two teams for World Championships

Beside the two national water polo teams from the Americas, all sides that qualified for the water polo tournaments of the 15th FINA World Championships are known. The two teams from Americas, in the men’s and women’s competition, will earn their Barcelona berth at the qualification tournament that will be held at the end of this month. The men’s national team representing Africa is South Africa.

The deadline to get to know the 16 nations that will participate at the Barcelona 2013 FINA World Championships is February 4. Event organisers plan to make the official draws for the men’s and women’s water polo tournaments in February or March, offering fans the chance to obtain useful information before buying their tickets.

TV broadcasters of 2013 FINA World Championships visit competition venues

November 22, 2012 Barcelona. Event organisers of the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona next year welcomed the delegates from various national and international TV stations to the World Broadcasting Meeting (WBM). The TV representatives that have the broadcasting rights for next year’s major sporting event visited the competition venues at the Palau Sant Jordi.

The TV delegates participating at the WBM have visited four competition venues: Moll de la Fusta (open water swimming and high diving), Piscina Municipal de Montjuïc (diving), Piscinas Picornell (water polo) and Palau Sant Jordi (swimming, synchronised swimming and the finals of the water polo tournaments). The event is the first big meeting organised ahead of the World Championships.

Myrtha Pools to build two pools for Barcelona 2013 at Palau Sant Jordi

Signing of the agreement with the Italian company in Moscow. The competition pool will be 3 meters deep due to synchronized swimming. The construction of the training pool will begin on 1 JuneThe Italian company Myrtha Pools, with over 50 years of experience in the business, will be responsible for building and implementing two removable pools at the Palau Sant Jordi for the 15th FINA World Championships Barcelona 2013. Members of the BCN2013 Organizing Committee have signed an agreement with the renowned company during the 2nd FINA World Aquatics Convention in Moscow. Directors of the company based in Castiglione delle Stiviere previously visited the Barcelona 2013 headquarters to convince event organizers of closing the deal.

Roberto Colletto, CEO of Myrtha Pools, and Fernando Carpena, president of the Barcelona 2013 Executive Committee, have signed the contract at the stand of the Italian company in the Hotel Crown Plaza.

Albert Guinovart to compose soundtrack for Barcelona 2013

Albert GuinovartThe Catalan musician and pianist Albert Guinovart will compose the soundtrack for the 15th FINA World Swimming Championships Barcelona 2013. Members of the event’s Organising Committee have decided to put the composer of the music for “El cor de la ciutat” in charge of all music pieces of the championships.

Guinovart, who already composed the music for the 2003 FINA World Championships in Barcelona, will write all the music played during the competition and at the start and end of each event, as well as the music accompanying the swimmers and officials, the music played during the medal ceremonies, the fanfares, the marches and some other parts related to the TV production.
