First clinic for Swimming Officials held in Jordan
The Jordan Swimming Federation organised its first clinic for swimming officials, as part of the FINA Development programme 2012, from April 20-27 in Amman. Bill Murdoch (GBR), who has been training officials for the past 22 years in Scotland, instructed 24 participants, including three from Iraq.
The clinic was conducted using PowerPoint presentations incorporating the FINA Swimming Video broken to each stroke, discussion and a final examination.
Swimming Officials clinic held in Port Moresby (PNG)
A FINA Development clinic for Swimming Officials was held in conjunction with the Theodist National Championships from April 18-22. The theory part took place from April 18-20 while the practical section was organised from 20-22 at the Sir Donald Cleland Pool.
The clinic provided a chance for all schools in NCDC to send a representative to learn about the fundamentals of conducting a swimming competition in a professional manner under FINA rules. Vice Chairman of the FINA Technical Swimming Committee Don Blew conducted the course, which was attended by 24 enthusiastic participants.
Building coaching expertise on South Pacific island of Samoa
A clinic for swimming coaches was organised at Apia's Faleata Swim Complex, Samoa from April 17-21, 2012. Hawaii-based Willem Sakovich - also known as "Uncle Bill" - instructed swimming coaches from intermediate to advanced level on various topics: how to teach skills of proficiency at all levels; identify stroke problems and correct them; participate in training drills and exercises for all strokes; give basic nutritional guidance and fitness training.
During the five-day course, Sakovich conducted training sessions for junior and senior squads with five coaches from two clubs as well as 47 swimmers, some of which were to participate in the Fiji Nationals two weeks later.
Diving Judges Certification course makes a splash in Tokyo (JPN)
A FINA Certification course for diving judges was organised at Tokyo's Tatsumi International Swimming Pool (JPN) From April 12-14, 2012. FINA TDC members Kathy Seaman (CAN) and Steve McFarland (USA) conducted the course, which was attended by 15 participants.
The aspiring judges learned about the rules pertaining to starting position, takeoff, flight and entry. Video clips from various FINA World Championships were also used so that judges could mark and discuss each dive.
Swimming Coaches clinic makes a splash in Nu'ukolofa (TGA)
A successful swimming Coaches (beginner) clinic was organised on the South Pacific island of Tonga, in Nu'ukolofa from April 10-17, 2012. Swimming coaching and teaching in Tonga is developing at a rapid rate with the assistance of a very dedicated group of volunteers led by Ella Mawdsley, Capacity Support Officer Tonga Association of Sport & National Olympic Committee and Secretary General of Tonga Swimming Rochelle Sineanganofo.
Warm weather, light sea breezes and big smiles were the order of the day as 32 participants turned up each day for the clinic conducted by Australian swimming coach and instructor Chris Smith.
Swimming Coaches clinic organised in Papeete (TAH)
A Swimming Coaches (intermediate) clinic was held in Papeete, Tahiti from April 9-16, 2012 with French expert Jean-Louis Morin instructing 12 participants. Theory and practice sessions were organised. Morin also took the opportunity to visit a school's sports unit.
Open water swimming Officials take the plunge in Eilat (ISR)
A FINA school for open water swimming officials was organised in Eilat (ISR) from March 29-30, 2012. Open water swimming expert Samuel Greetham from Great Britain shared his valuable experience with the 23 participants. Apart from local participants, some were from Turkey and Malta.
The course focussed on the origins of open water swimming, FINA structure and rules, duties and roles of officials, timekeeping, race rules, risk management, etc. Practical sessions were held during the National Championships. At the end of the course, Greetham said: "Candidates were of a very high calibre."
Two Water polo Referee schools held in North America
The first FINA water polo school for referees was organised in Thousand Oaks, South California (USA) from March 23-25, 2012. TWPC Chairman Gianni Lonzi (ITA) and TWPC member Niculae Firoiu (GRE) led the course, which was attended by 29 participants. Among them, 23 American, two participants from Georgia, one from Uzbekistan, one from Costa Rica and one from Trinidad and Tobago.
A few days later, the lecturers made a stop in Edmonton, Alberta (CAN) for a second water polo school, held from March 28-30, 2012. 12 participants - 10 locals, one participant from Venezuela and one from Hong Kong - enthusiastically took part in the course, during which a new theme was discussed: "Psychological preparation of the referee".
Swimming Officials school held in San Juan (PUR)
A school for swimming officials took place in San Juan, Puerto Rico from March 23-24, 2012. 18 local participants took part in the course, which was conducted by FINA TSC Chairman Carol Zaleski and TSC member Errol Clarke (BAR).
Excellent instruction at Diving Officials certification course in Beijing (CHN)
2012's first FINA certification course for diving officials (intermediate level) was held at Beijing's iconic "Water Cube" from March 22-24. The course was scheduled to take place on the fringe of the FINA Diving World Series Beijing leg and was conducted by FINA TDC members Anke Piper (GER) and Ann Sissons (NZL) with 25 participants from 5 different countries.
