Judging Synchro not an easy task (JAM)
A synchronised swimming clinic for Judges was successfully held in Kingston, Jamaica, from October 5-9, 2010. 21 participants (14 local and seven coming from other Caribbean islands), from Beginner to Advanced level, benefited from the expertise of Barbara McNamee from the USA.
During the five-day clinic, the participants reviewed a great deal of judging aspects in synchronised swimming, a very complex (and complete) sport when someone considers both the artistic and technical dimensions of it. Subjects like the appreciation of a free and technical routine, the ability to analyse the relative difficulty of all aspects of a routine and the knowledge and understanding of all FINA Figures and their component part from the standpoint of perfection were, among others, discussed.
31 Coaches benefit from Swimming clinic in Doha (QAT)
An intense Swimming Coaches clinic (Level 2 and 3) took place in Doha, Qatar, from October 3-14, which gathered 31 enthusiastic local participants. The Lecturer of the clinic Gerd Nottelmann from Germany was delighted to see very much engaged and interested participants.
Olympic Solidarity takes action in Panama (PAN)
A FINA/Olympic Solidarity Technical Course was held for Intermediate-level Swimming Coaches in Panama City on September 14-19, 2010.
In all, 27 participants benefited from the knowledge and experience of Rafael Reyes Romero from Spain. The course comprised both theory (e.g. basis of training systems, dry-land training, training technique and season planning) and practice (how to design, develop and control a training session).
Romero noted that it was of tremendous importance to continue develop such technical courses, which arouse great motivation from coaches and help foster the sport of swimming in Panama.
British Swimming Neil Booth teaches Swimming Officials in Windhoek (NAM)
St. Pauls School and the Dolphins Swimming Club welcomed 15 participants for a Swimming Coaches and Officials clinic (Beginner and Intermediate Level) in Namibia's capital, Windhoek, from August 12-15, 2010.
Neil Booth from British Swimming, who has been a Referee for many years at all competition levels, conducted the clinic. The structure of the course was built around PowerPoint presentations and small group discussions. The content included the history of Swimming and FINA, Competition Management, Powers of Officials, Laws of the Strokes, as well as poolside practical sessions, racing and a final examination.
While he was there, Booth also discussed the establishing of a local training structure for Swimming Officials in Windhoek.
Olympic Solidarity trains Synchro Coaches in Guatemala
19 aspiring Synchronised swimming Coaches participated in a technical course (beginner level) from the FINA/IOC Olympic Solidarity Programme in Ciudad de Guatemala (GUA) from August 9-15 2010.
Expert Virginia villalba Lopez from the Royal Spanish Synchronised Swimming Federation addressed fundamental synchro topics, preparing all participants to be one day accomplished coaches in the discipline.
Swimming Coaches clinic crowned with success in Nairobi (KEN)
50 participants took part in a Swimming Coaches clinic (Level 1) held in Nairobi, Kenya, from August 2-12, 2010. All were locals except two; one came from Rwanda, the other from Uganda.
Lecturer Gerd Nottelmann from the German Swimming Federation was very satisfied with the 10-day clinic. Participants were very much engaged and interested in the lecture, and that greatly contributed to the success of the clinic.
Besides, Nottelmann noted in his report that the Kenya Swimming Federation is still young and that the sport of swimming is progressing in the country.
Diving Judges clinic makes a splash in Mayaguez (PUR)
A Diving Judges clinic (Intermediate Level) was held in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, from July 19-22, 2010. 12 participants, among which 5 locals and 7 foreigners, were trained by Kathy Seaman, FINA TDC Member. The clinic programme comprised topic such as Judging Fundamentals, Elements of Judging a Dive, Judging Technique, Synchro Rule, with a written Exam at the end.
The clinic was well organised, reports Ms Seaman, the classroom facilities and video equipment provided were excellent as well. Moreover, participants expressed the wish to have more Diving Judges clinics held in Puerto Rico to further develop diving in the country.
Olympic Solidarity's great job in Blantyre (MAW)
Famous American coach Richard "Rick" Powers travelled to Blantyre, Malawi, to be part of the FINA/Olympic Solidarity Development Programme, giving a technical course to Beginner-level Swimming Coaches from July 11-22, 2010.
29 coaches and 10 swimmers enthusiastically attended the course, which included a wide range of topics: Physiology of training, season planning, workout organisation, dry-land training, mental training, technique for all strokes, starts and turns, motivation and tapering.
Excellent instruction at Swimming Coaches clinic in Kampala (UGA)
As part of its 2010 development programme, and in conjunction with Uganda Swimming Federation (USF), FINA funded a Swimming Coaches clinic (Level 1) in Uganda from July 5-14, at the Hotel Africana and the Aga Khan Swimming Pool in Kampala. The event was coordinated by the USF.
The following report was submitted by Uganda Swimming Federation Donald Rukare following the successful completion of the clinic:
The clinic’s primary focus was on building capacity of coaches in Uganda. The objectives of the clinic were to (1) to develop high calibre swimming coaches in Uganda (2) to build on the previously held FINA swimming clinic in 2009.
Promising Swimming and Diving clinics in La Havana (CUB)
Two advanced-level clinics for Swimming and Diving Referees took place in La Havana, Cuba, from 27 June – 2 July, 2010.
53 participants, two of which were non-Cuban, attended the swimming clinic, given by visiting lecturer Jose Ismael Gonzalez from the Guatemala Swimming Federation, who also happens to be CCCAN Vice-President, UANA Member, FINA Referee and FINA TSC Member.
