Synchro Coaches enjoy first clinic of the year in Colombo (SRI)

The FINA Development Programme for Coaches and Officials kicks off 2012 with its first clinic for synchronised swimming coaches in Asia. It is aimed at building solid knowledge and legacy thanks to technical training in countries that are developing FINA sports.

16 beginner coaches from Sri Lanka took part in a synchro clinic at Colombo's Otter Aquatic Club from January 5-8. Japanese Miwako Homma, FINA TSSC Member, shared her valuable expertise to introduce the basic technical elements of synchronised swimming to the aspiring coaches. Both theory and pool sessions were organised during the four-day course.

A clinic for Swimming Coaches and Officials (intermediate level) was organised in Papeete, Tahiti, from December 8-20, 2011 attended enthusiastically by 12 coaches and 25 officials. Expert Jean-Louis Morin from the Fédération Française de Natation was onsite to share his experience and knowledge. Following the course, the participants tested their skills during the short-course Polynesian Championships.

2011 Diving Judges programme ends on a high note

The last of the 2011 FINA Diving Judges Certification Courses took place in Adelaide (Australia) from December 7-9 with 16 local participants. Michael Geissbuhler (Switzerland) and Kathy Seaman (Canada) from the FINA Technical Diving Committee instructed the course. The course content was varied: new FINA judges regulations, review of several dives, video practical exam, judges assessments and a written test at the end.

On the success of the course, the experts said: "The participants showed good quality in their knowledge and application of the diving rules."

Synchro Coaches clinic builds legacy in the Caribbean

The Barbados Amateur Swimming Association organised a synchronised swimming clinic for coaches in Bridgetown from December 5-9 at the Headquarters of the Barbados Olympic Association. The clinic was conducted by Khadija Cutcher from Synchro Canada with ten participants, including two from Trinidad & Tobago.

At the conclusion of the successful four days, the participants said they had learned a lot and in the case of Barbados will structure the local programme around information obtained from the clinic. The Participants from Trinidad & Tobago vowed to get the discipline going in their country and will keep in close touch with Barbados for the necessary support.

Swimming Coaches learn from the best in Harare (ZIM)

A FINA Swimming Coaches Certification Course (level 3) was held in Harare, Zimbabwe from November 30 to December 2, 2011. In all, 18 participants attended (15 local, 2 from Zambia and one from Malawi) with coaching experience ranging from 3 to 20 years. American expert Larry Laursen, now living in Namibia and current consultant to University of Pretoria Sports as High Performance specialist, gave the course.

Many important topics were addressed: Building a Coaching Model, Mechanics of Swimming, Race Starts, Turning Skills, Training Principles, Physical Well-Being, Core Body Strength, Talent Identification, among others. The participants had the opportunity to test their newly-acquired skills the following two days at the Mashonaland Championships. Laursen discussed with them the strokes and techniques, the pacing and did race analysis.

Swimming Coaches clinics make successful stops in Asia

A first clinic for advanced Swimming Coaches was organised by the Swimming Federation of India in Ranchi (in the eastern part of the country) from November 16-20. 50 enthusiastic coaches from various parts of India attended the course led by James Puleo from USA Swimming in a newly built aquatic complex.

Two days later, a second of the kind was held in Amman (Jordan) and lasted until November 27. It was attended by 37 local participants and instructed by German expert Gerd Nottelmann.

Water polo Referee school is held in Barcelona (ESP)

A school for water polo referees was held in Barcelona (Spain) from November 11-13. FINA Technical Water Polo Committee Chairman Gianni Lonzi instructed 25 participants (all Spanish, except a Greek and Turkish referee). During the three-day course, topics such as the application of FINA Rules, importance of Center/Center-back play, specific of simulations, provocations and pressing during the game were discussed.

The last of the 2011 FINA Swimming Officials Schools was held in Abuja (Nigeria) with the presence of FINA Bureau Member Ben Ekumbo and Gbenga Lawal, Member of the FINA Technical Swimming Committee. 39 participants (including one from Botswana and two from Ghana) attended the course which was held from November 8-9.

Swimming clinic trains Coaches in Ghana

With just a few remaining Technical Courses for Swimming Coaches to be given in the course of December, the FINA clinics programme 2011 is coming to a close with one course being held in Accra (Ghana) from November 1-8.

The beginner-level course welcomed 43 participants and was taught by expert Joshua Neuloh from Germany. The following topics were addressed: teaching approaches, technical aspects of freestyle swimming, training control methods, role of the coach and training principles.
