Diving Judge Certification course held in Eindhoven (NED)

Development News

A FINA Certification course for diving judges was organised in Eindhoven (NED) at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium from May 18-20, 2012. FINA TDC members Ann Sissons (NZL) and Kathy Seaman (CAN) conducted the course, which was held during the European Diving Championships.

The course welcomed 12 participants, from the Netherlands, Turkey, Italy, Germany, Lithuania and Canada.

Successful Swimming Officials clinic held in Saipan (NMA)

Development News

A beginner-level clinic for swimming officials took place in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands from May 15-19, 2012 with FINA TSC Vice Chairman Don Blew (AUS) as instructor. 18 participants attended the clinic to get a valuable introduction to officiating in the sport of swimming.

Post-clinic, Don Blew said: "All attendees were very keen to learn all aspects of what is required to conduct a swim meet and learn the stroking rules."

Thumbs up for Diving Judge school in Singapore

A FINA school for diving judged was organised at Singapore's Toa Payoh Swimming Complex from May 5-6, 2012. TDC member Mathz Lindberg (SWE), former diver and father of still-competitive Anna Lindberg, conducted the course, which was attended by 22 beginner-level participants.

The course focused on the fundamentals and duties of officials. Practical aspects such as how to run a diving competition, equipment for judging and judging practice were addressed during poolside sessions.

Innovative clinic trains Swimming Officials in Cayman Islands

A swimming officials clinic took place from May 2-7, 2012 in Georgetown, Grand Cayman Islands. Referee Neil Booth from Great Britain, who has officiated at all levels of competition for many years, instructed 32 participants.

The structure of the course was built around PowerPoint presentations, mixed-size group discussion and then review and re-enforcement following discussion. Skype technology was used to include officials from Cayman Brac in the sessions, an innovative solution to avoid prohibitive costs.

Swimming school delights Officials in Kuala Lumpur (MAS)

The Asian stop of the 2012 FINA Swimming Officials School programme was successfully organised by the Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia from April 30 to May 1, 2012 at the National Sports Stadium Complex. The School had a total of 38 participants. Among them, 15 were from the host Federation and 23 came from seven different countries (Indonesia, Iran, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Trinidad & Tobago).

All participants were eager to learn and actively took part in discussions. Poolside sessions were organised at the 50m pool at the National Swimming Complex, which was built for the Commonwealth Games. Six girls and six boys from the Kuala Lumpur Ikan Bilis Swim Club were present with their coach. The participants were divided into two teams and trained their officiating skills with various swimming events.

First clinic for Swimming Officials held in Jordan

The Jordan Swimming Federation organised its first clinic for swimming officials, as part of the FINA Development programme 2012, from April 20-27 in Amman. Bill Murdoch (GBR), who has been training officials for the past 22 years in Scotland, instructed 24 participants, including three from Iraq.
 
The clinic was conducted using PowerPoint presentations incorporating the FINA Swimming Video broken to each stroke, discussion and a final examination.

A FINA Development clinic for Swimming Officials was held in conjunction with the Theodist National Championships from April 18-22. The theory part took place from April 18-20 while the practical section was organised from 20-22 at the Sir Donald Cleland Pool.

The clinic provided a chance for all schools in NCDC to send a representative to learn about the fundamentals of conducting a swimming competition in a professional manner under FINA rules. Vice Chairman of the FINA Technical Swimming Committee Don Blew conducted the course, which was attended by 24 enthusiastic participants.

Building coaching expertise on South Pacific island of Samoa

A clinic for swimming coaches was organised at Apia's Faleata Swim Complex, Samoa from April 17-21, 2012. Hawaii-based Willem Sakovich - also known as "Uncle Bill" - instructed swimming coaches from intermediate to advanced level on various topics: how to teach skills of proficiency at all levels; identify stroke problems and correct them; participate in training drills and exercises for all strokes; give basic nutritional guidance and fitness training.

During the five-day course, Sakovich conducted training sessions for junior and senior squads with five coaches from two clubs as well as 47 swimmers, some of which were to participate in the Fiji Nationals two weeks later.

Diving Judges Certification course makes a splash in Tokyo (JPN)

A FINA Certification course for diving judges was organised at Tokyo's Tatsumi International Swimming Pool (JPN) From April 12-14, 2012. FINA TDC members Kathy Seaman (CAN) and Steve McFarland (USA) conducted the course, which was attended by 15 participants.

The aspiring judges learned about the rules pertaining to starting position, takeoff, flight and entry. Video clips from various FINA World Championships were also used so that judges could mark and discuss each dive.

Swimming Coaches clinic makes a splash in Nu'ukolofa (TGA)

A successful swimming Coaches (beginner) clinic was organised on the South Pacific island of Tonga, in Nu'ukolofa from April 10-17, 2012. Swimming coaching and teaching in Tonga is developing at a rapid rate with the assistance of a very dedicated group of volunteers led by Ella Mawdsley, Capacity Support Officer Tonga Association of Sport & National Olympic Committee and Secretary General of Tonga Swimming Rochelle Sineanganofo.

Warm weather, light sea breezes and big smiles were the order of the day as 32 participants turned up each day for the clinic conducted by Australian swimming coach and instructor Chris Smith.
