November 1, 2012 MOSCOW - The 2nd FINA World Aquatics Convention drew to a close, successfully bringing together the entire Aquatics community and reinforcing the ties between all players - partners, manufacturers, coaches, athletes and national federations - to bring the development of FINA's sports to new heights.
A number of crucial topics pertaining to the Aquatics movement was discussed on this last day: national priorities for elite sport, financial realities of high-level sport, global markets and new technologies, new trends in coaching and team management.
FINA World Aquatics Convention continues in Moscow
October 31, 2012 MOSCOW - Day 2 started with two streams of presentations, addressing a wide range of topics: the media and aquatics, latest developments in pool design, new ideas for the five FINA sports, upcoming courses for athletes, coaches and administrators, benefits for host cities and organising committees to stage FINA events.
The newly launched, three-day event is becoming a focal point for the entire Aquatics community - the FINA Family, National Federations, partners, manufacturers, athletes and coaches, bidders and organisers of FINA events, media etc. - to exchange ideas and find new ways to develop the Sport worldwide. FINA IN MOURNING - Nick Thierry (CAN)
FINA has learnt with great sadness the loss of Nick Thierry (CAN) on October 2, 2012 in Toronto. His immense contribution to the Sport of Swimming, throughout his activities as coach, journalist and statistician will long be remembered by the FINA Family.
Nick was a true devoted lover of Swimming, having consecrated it the major part of his life. He was for many years FINA's most valuable source of swimming rankings, a superb and brilliant work very much appreciated by the coaches, athletes, media and fans of the sport in general. He has done it in a discreet but passionate way, sharing his knowledge and experience with many generations of swimming experts.Italy's Paolo Barelli elected new LEN President
Paolo Barelli from Italy was elected on September 29, 2012 at the helm of the Ligue Européenne de Natation (LEN) for a four-year term during the LEN Congress in Cascais, Portugal. Barelli has been a LEN Bureau Member since 2008 and succeeds Nory Kruchten of Luxembourg.
After the Congress Barelli declared: “It is our aim to keep up the high level of European Aquatics, although it will not be easy in these economically difficult times. With an effort of the entire LEN team we might be able to get it done.”
Sam Ramsamy (RSA) is new President of African Swimming Confederation
South African Sam Ramsamy, FINA Vice-President and IOC Member, was elected as President of CANA, the Confederation of African Swimming Associations, at the General Assembly held during the 11th African Championships in Nairobi (Kenya).
He takes over from CANA President Mustafa Larfaoui from Algeria. Kenya's Ben Ekumbo is the new CANA Secretary General and Treasurer. CANA currently has 52 member associations.
FINA President Dr. Maglione re-elected at the head of Uruguayan NOC
FINA President Dr. Julio Cesar Maglione was re-elected for a fifth term as President of the Uruguayan National Olympic Committee. He was firstly elected as President of the Uruguayan NOC in 1996, then in 1998, 2004 and 2008. Dr. Julio Cesar Maglione has been an IOC Member since 1996. He was a national champion and national record holder in the 100m and 200m butterfly and breaststroke from 1949 to 1954. During his swimming career, he achieved the following results: a bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke and 100m butterfly, and a silver medal in the 4x100 relay at the Latin-American Games in La Havana, Cuba in 1954.
FINA in mourning – Dr. Brian Sando (AUS)
FINA learnt with great sadness about the loss of Dr. Brian Sando, member of the Doping Control Review Board, and one of the most respected and experienced sports medicine doctors in Australia. He was also a well-known expert in the area of anti-doping programmes. Dr. Sando passed away on August 4, 2012 in Adelaide (AUS) at the age of 76.
Dr. Andrew Pipe, chairman of the FINA Doping Control Review Board, left his tribute to the work and career of Dr. Sando: “His contributions to sport in Australia and internationally were immense and it is hard to imagine a FINA World Championships or an Olympic Games without his presence. Each of us will have our own special memories of Brian but his dry sense of humour, his kindness and compassion, his love of sport, and his integrity and intrinsic sense of fair-play were evident to all and immensely valued by each of us.”
To his family, friends, and sport community in Australia FINA addresses its sincere condolences.
FINA in mourning - Prof. Winton Arthur Hawksworth (RSA)
FINA announces with great sadness the loss of Prof. Winton Arthur Hawksworth (RSA), member of the FINA Doping Control Review Board (DCRB) since its creation in 1999. After a short illness, Prof. Hawksworth passed away on March 26, 2012. He is survived by his wife Pauline, his four children and five grandchildren.
In a message addressed to FINA, Dr. Andrew Pipe, Chairman of the DCRB, recalled a “wonderful friend and colleague, a superb scientist, and an educator who influenced the lives of thousands of students in South Africa and so many others who were touched by his generosity of spirit. His warmth and gentle good humour will be missed by all on the FINA DCRB and his many other friends in the FINA family”.

FINA mourns Mr. Klaas van de Pol (NED)
FINA announces with great sadness the loss of its Honorary Member Klaas van de Pol (NED), who passed away on January 23, 2012 at the age of 87.
Mr. Van de Pol had been FINA Honorary Treasurer from 1980 to 1992, becoming a Honorary Member since 1996. A very respected aquatic leader in his home country, The Netherlands, Mr. Van de Pol was essential in the promotion of women’s water polo worldwide and has also played an important role in the development of the early stages of marketing applied to Aquatics. For his outstanding contribution to our International Federation, he was awarded the FINA Gold Pin in 1988.
To his family, friends, and to the entire aquatic community in The Netherlands, FINA addresses its sincere condolences.
Matt Dunn appointed Member of WADA Athlete Committee
Matthew Dunn from Australia, Member of the FINA Athletes Commission, has been appointed Member of the WADA Athlete Committee for a term of three years, commencing on 1 January 2012. In undertaking this new task, Dunn pursues FINA's commitment for a drug-free sport.
