The ceremony concluded with a synchronised swimming, acrobatic and musical show, completed by a jet-ski exhibition in the pool!Shortly after the conclusion of the swimming finals, the Closing Ceremony of the 15th FINA World Championships gathered all the flags of the 180 participating countries in Barcelona (ESP), while the FINA flag was officially given to the city of Kazan (RUS), the next organiser of FINA’s major event in 2015. 

“We come to the end of a great Aquatic Festival here in Barcelona! During two weeks, our best athletes performed at the highest level with remarkable results. My sincere thank you to all of them! The venues, the Host Broadcaster, the spectators, the organisation and the hosts’ hospitality were amazing”, said FINA President Dr. Julio C. Maglione. “The 15th FINA World Championships has increased the importance and value of all our aquatic disciplines and FINA brand gained more exposure and prestige. I would like to express our sincere gratitude to all Spanish and Catalan authorities, to the Organising Committee Barcelona 2013, to the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation, and to the volunteers for their contribution, support and excellence in staging these 15th FINA World Championships here in Barcelona. These Championships were unforgettable!” added Dr. Maglione.

Aquatic Family gathered at the FINA Gala Dinner

Prince of Spain FelipeThe Prince of Spain Felipe honoured FINA with his presence on July 27, 2013 at the FINA Gala Dinner, organised in the National Art Museum of Catalunya (MNAC) in Barcelona (ESP). Gathering around 1000 attendees, this convivial occasion was also highlighted by the presence of the best Olympian in history (22 medals including 18 titles), US swimmer Michael Phelps, as well as several IOC members and many Spanish and Catalan authorities.

Representatives of the FINA National Federations present in Barcelona for the 15th FINA World Championships, as well as members of the FINA Technical Committees and Commissions were also in attendance. Finally, the sponsors and suppliers of the championships were obviously invited to this Gala Dinner.

Orlando Duque: "Why High Diving? Because it's a new challenge"

Orlando Duque (COL)Orlando Duque, from Colombia, is one of the most well-known high divers in the world. He explained today to the media in Barcelona (ESP), two days before the start of the High Diving competition, for the first time included in the programme of a FINA World Championships, what leads a pool diver like him, to higher heights. “When you dive on a pool, it gets a bit boring after a while. All the pools look the same and you want to look for something different. Then, you start to think on diving a bit higher, then again a bit higher and then you end up doing the 27m-platform. It’s a kind of new challenge. This was my case”, considered Duque, a champion in the Cliff Diving World Series.

FINA Masters Congress

The FINA Masters Congress was organised today in Barcelona (ESP), during the sixth day of competition at the 15th FINA World Championships. The delegates sanctioned the following main changes:
-    New requirements for the approval of World Records and top-10 results;
-    Water temperature for open water events must be comprised between 18° and 31° Celsius;
-    In water polo, at the FINA World Masters Championships, a player cannot represent more than one team;
-    In Synchro, new adjustments in the judging system and change in the age groups (starting now at 25-29 – previously 20-29).

 

FINA Technical Swimming Congress

FINA held today its Swimming Technical Congress in Barcelona (ESP), with the presence of delegates from 134 National Federations.

The main decisions of the Congress were:

- Introduction of Mixed Relays, “which must consist of two men and two women”. World Records will be recognised in 50m-pool for the 4x100m free and medley mixed relays. In relation to split times in these events, they “cannot be used for records and/or entry purposes”.
- Approval of 25m World Records in the 4x50m free and 4x50m medley relays, and the 4x50m free and 4x50m medley mixed relays.
- The rules on breaststroke concerning the start and the turn remain as in the present rulebook.
