FINA World Junior Water Polo Championships
FINA organises World Championships for young women and men water
polo players every year. From 2011 on, a new age group competition
format has been launched with World Junior Championships for “20
Year & Under” taking place in odd years and World Youth
Championships “18 Years & Under” in even years.
In 2012, the first-ever FINA World Youth Water Polo Championships (18 & U) for both men and women was held in Perth (AUS) from December 1-9. Click here to be redirected on the Youth page.
The 17th FINA World Men's Junior Water Polo Championships 2013 (20 & U) will be held in Szombathely (HUN) from August 12-18, 2013. 16 teams will be participating in the tournament.
The 10th FINA World Women's Junior Water Polo Championships 2013 (20 & U) will take place in Volos (GRE) from August 19-25, 2013.
WP Juniors (W), Day 7: USA takes gold after 9-7 win over Spain
Volos (Greece), 25 August – The team of USA conquered the 2013 title at the FINA World Junior Women’s Water Polo Championships in Volos (GRE), after beating in the decisive match of the tournament an inspired squad of Spain. The North Americans confirmed their favourite status and culminated a superb week with a fair win in the last game, by 9-7. As for the bronze, it went to home country Greece which took a close triumph against Russia. The best player of the tournament was Rachel Fattal (USA), while her teammate Ashleigh Johnson earned the prize of the best goalkeeper. As for the most goals (23) of the tournament, they were scored by Spain’s Roser Tarrago Aymerich.

Volos (Greece) 23 August – Three great thrillers and an easy win for Greece marked the fifth day of the FINA World Women’s Junior Water Championships here in Volos. USA, Spain and Russia proceed, after quite undecided matches, to the semifinals (the host country is also in final-four) leaving out of contention Hungary, Australia and Italy respectively. Brazil finished its participation in 13th, while Canada and New Zealand will fight for the ninth place in the tournament.

Volos (Greece), 21 August – In another exciting day in Volos, home country Greece achieved the greatest win among the seven matches on the programme, sealing its presence in the quarterfinals. A very celebrated outcome after a dramatic end of the match against Canada, and a decisive goal in the last second! USA, Australia and Russia also assured their qualification for the quarterfinals, after getting their third victories in the tournament.

Volos (Greece), 20 August - In a very exciting day in Volos, all the seven games were really interesting with many beautiful goals, turnovers, unexpected results and the first draw. The match of this second day was the last one, with Greece celebrating a crucial victory against Spain in front of the Hellenic supporters. Another highlight was the second victory of the USA in the tournament (this time against Italy), making the North Americans a strong contender for the quarterfinals. Russia and Australia also assured their second win in Volos.

Szombathely (Hungary), 18 August – The Italian team completed its mission: after earning this age-group’s U18 world title and the U19 European triumph they added the U20 world crown to their tally. They proved their tactical and physical superiority against Croatia as well.
Serbia clinched the bronze medal by winning a great game against the hosts Hungarians.
WP Juniors (M), Day 6: Italy faces off Croatia in the final
Szombathely (Hungary), 17 August – Just as in last year, at the Olympic Games, Italy meets Croatia in the final. Now the two nations’ best juniors clash for the U20 world title. So far, these youngsters are just dreaming of playing at the Olympics, but they have definitely taken the first steps towards the highest level. In the semis, Italy won a tough defensive game against Serbia while Croatia’s huge blasts sank Hungary’s ship to the sadness of one and half thousand fans around the pool.

SZOMBATHELY (Hungary), 16 August – Summer returned to the host city so everything was given to enjoy the very best of water polo: beautiful sunshine, a great outdoor pool in the green and packed stands around. The traditional powerhouses had all the answers for the challenges they faced in the quarters: the European giants didn’t leave the decision to the dying minutes against the teams from the other continents, Italy beat USA, Serbia kept Australia at bay and Croatia defeated Brazil. In the most thrilling match of the day Hungary managed to oust Spain.
