FINA organises World Championships for young women and men water
polo players every year. From 2011 on, a new age group competition
format has been launched with World Junior Championships for “20
Year & Under” taking place in odd years and World Youth
Championships “18 Years & Under” in even years.
In 2012, the first-ever FINA World Youth Water Polo Championships
(18 & U) for both men and women was held in Perth (AUS)

The 17th FINA World Men's Junior Water Polo Championships 2013 (20 & U) will be held in Szombathely (HUN) from August 12-18, 2013. 16 teams will be participating in the tournament.
The 10th FINA World Women's Junior Water Polo Championships 2013 (20 & U) will take place in Volos (GRE) from August 19-25, 2013.

TRIESTE, Italy (September 17) - For the first time Spain won the crown of a major women water polo tournament as their team was triumphed in Trieste at the World Junior Women’s Water Polo Championships.
They played with patience and discipline and waited for their moment which came in the fourth quarter in the final when the exhausted Hungarians couldn’t keep up the pace any more. Australia came third beating the other “marathon-team”, Russia, while the home side, Italy clinched the fifth position.

TRIESTE, Italy (September 16) - Another fantastic day in Trieste, at the World Junior Women’s Water Polo Championships. The two semifinals brought tremendous excitement and an amazing performance of determination and will from the players of the four teams targeting the gold medal.
Hungary managed to gain a second successive over-time win, this time against the Russians, while the Spanish team came from behind again to beat the Australians.

TRIESTE, Italy (September 15) - Day five produced the water polo we love: all but two games were decided only in the dying minutes of the fourth quarters and three of the day’s contests went to extra-time (and one was decided in a penalty-shootout).
Hungary, Spain and Russia all came from behind, working hard to overcome two-three-goal deficits to reach the semifinals, while the Australians had an easier ride against the young Greek team.

TRIESTE, Italy (September 14) - No upset on Day Four in Trieste, at the World Junior Women’s Championships – all teams holding a stronger chance reached the quarterfinals, including the USA, the Netherlands and Australia.
The day’s only balanced contest saw Italy coming up with a strong performance leaving no chance for the Canadians and deciding the game virtually by half-time.

TRIESTE, Italy (September 13) - Hungary, Russia, Greece and Spain clinched the top spots of their respective groups and qualified directly to the quarterfinals at the FINA World Junior Women’s Water Polo Championships, taking place in Trieste (ITA) until September 17, 2011.
Australia, the Netherlands and the US had a strong chance to reach the best eight while Italy and Canada face each other in a mouth-watering clash on Wednesday.

TRIESTE, Italy (September 12) - Though ten teams are through after the second round, the great excitements are still ahead even at this stage in Trieste, at the 9th FINA World Junior Women’s Water Polo Championships.
None of the group-winners have been determined: in Group A and Group B the goal-differences of the last round games will be interesting as the group-leaders had ties in their games against each other (on the opening day). Group C and D will see a battle for the top spot on Day 3. Still, Australia, Hungary, China, Russia, Netherlands, Uzbekistan, USA, Greece, Spain and Canada booked their places in the knock-out phase.

TRIESTE, Italy (September 11) - With the pool-side parade of the 16 teams, the 9th edition of FINA’s World Junior Women’s Water Polo Championships was launched in the city of Trieste, Italy. After the warm words from the host nations‘ representatives Prof. Franco del Campo (Director of the Municipality of Trieste), Sergio Rinaldi (FIN, Italian Swimming Federation) and Enrico Samer (Chairman of the Organising Committee), FINA Bureau Member Dimitris Diathesopoulos welcomed the participants on behalf of FINA and of FINA President Dr. Julio C. Maglione.
“Italy has a very rich history in water polo, just a few weeks ago they became World Champions in Shanghai among the men,” Mr. Diathesopoulos said. “So it is a big honour for us, the water polo family, that Italy once again offers its hospitality for such a great event. During this week we will see the future of women’s worldwide water polo as we have teams from sixteen countries from five continents”. He added: “Italy has great organising experience, Trieste has excellent facilities and all these assure the success of this World Championships”. Mr. Diathesopoulos thanked to the Italian Swimming Federation (FIN), the Municipality and the City of Trieste, the members of the Organising Committee and the volunteers the great efforts they already put into hosting this event and wished good luck for the teams and the officials.
WP Juniors (Men), Day 9: Serbia defeats Spain to capture FINA Men's Junior Water Polo

VOLOS, Greece (September 4) - Serbia defeated Spain to claim the 16th FINA World Junior Men's Water Polo Championships powered by three goals from Nikola DEDOVIC and Aleska SAPONDIC. Srdan YUKSANOVIC scored with just seconds left in the game to claim Serbia's first title in the nine day tournament held in Volos, Greece. In 2009 Serbia defeated Montenegro 7-6 to capture the bronze medal. The nation of Serbia Montenegro claimed two consecutive championships in 2003 and 2005.
Serbian goalkeeper Dimitride RISTICEVIC, voted the most valuable goalie of the tournament said: "We were beaten by Spain in the preliminary rounds and we were better prepared to face them today. This victory today is special for my team and I think we are the best team in this tournament." The Spanish team was awarded silver medals.
WP Juniors (Men), Day 8: Serbia beats Greece in overtime, will play Spain for Championship

VOLOS, Greece (September 3) - Serbia will meet Spain on Sunday evening in the championship game following their narrow defeat of Greece in an overtime period of the semi finals. Spain would knock off Australia, their margin also just one goal, advancing their team into the final match.
Serbia defeated hometown favorite Greece in a tight match watched by nearly 2000 fans who were heartbroken to see several last second assaults deflected by Serb goalkeeper Dimitride RISTICEVIC. Team captain Angelos VLACHOPOULOS landed the first Greek goal followed 90 seconds later by a second goal from Kyriakos PONTIKEAS. RISTICEVIC deflected a Greek missile that seemed certain to tie the game in the final second of the first half.

VOLOS, Greece (September 2) - More than 1500 fans of Greek water polo overwhelmed the spectator seating areas to watch their champions in action against the team from Hungary. Kostantinos GENIDOUNIAS would drill the first goal for Greece to the roaring approval of the crowd. Less than a minute later Hungary's Daniel ANGYAL would retaliate to even the score. GENIDOUNIAS would find the inside of the net three times in the first quarter giving his team a 7-3 lead at the end of the first period. GENIDOUNIAS would score again in the third quarter for four goals in the game. Marios KAPOTIS and team captain Angelos VLLACHOPOULOS would also net four goals in the evening's game for the Greek team. The score at the half would favor Greece, 11 to 5. The home team would tally 14 goals with eight for Hungary. The winners will advance to play Serbia in the marquee event on Saturday evening. Hungary will meet Croatia tomorrow to settle places 5 through 8.
Spain defeated Montenegro by a margin of four goals, the score: 9-5 advancing the team into the final bracket of four teams challenging for the championship. Victor CABANAS PEGADO collected three goals in the evening's match for his Spanish team. Spain led 4-2 at the end of the half and 7-3 at the conclusion of the third quarter. Spain will meet Australia in the semi final round for places 1 through 4.
