Water Polo Referees upgrade skills in Sao Paulo (BRA)
The first FINA Water Polo School for Referees of the year, was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from February 18-20.
FINA Technical Water Polo Committee (TWPC) Chairman Gianni Lonzi was the assigned expert for the course. TWPC Member Jorge R. Pagura, Secretary of Sport for the state of Sao Paulo, welcomed all 18 participating referees in the name of the President of the Brazilian Swimming Federation, Mr. Coaracy Nunes Filho, also FINA Bureau Member. International water polo referee Mr. Cabral was there to translate into Brazilian.
2011 Olympic Solidarity Programme gets started in Belgrade (SRB)
The 2011 FINA/IOC Olympic Solidarity Development Programme kicks off in Europe with a first stop at the Serbian Institute of Sport in Belgrade, Serbia, where a Technical Course for Synchronised Swimming Coaches (Intermediate level) was held from February 15-22.
30 motivated participants gathered to get expertise from Jennifer Gray, the principal Lecturer and Field Chair for Sport and Coaching Studies at Oxford Brookes University, England.
All participants took a technical and theoretical exam at the end of the course.
FINA Swimming Officials schools inaugurated in the Bahamas
The FINA Bureau decided in 2010 to establish Swimming Officials Schools as recommended by the FINA TSC. Contrary to the FINA Swimming Officials Seminar, the Schools programme is a basic programme from which Federations should build up educational programmes for each duty of the officials for the development of officiating within their own Federation.
For 2011 the FINA Bureau has approved to start with five Schools – one in each of the Continental Organisations.
What it takes to be a good Diving Judge (GBR)
The first FINA Diving Judges Certification Course of the year attracted 17 participants at the Southend Swimming and Diving Center, Essex (GBR), from January 28-30. FINA Technical Diving Committee Members Anke Piper, from Germany, and Frans v.d. Konijnenburg, from the Netherlands, gave the course, which included the following elements: requirements for good judging, duties of the referee, judging the dive and synchro diving, summary of the penalties. At the end of the course, a test and briefing took place.
FINA Development programme 2011 kicks off in Kampala (UGA)
Uganda Swimming Federation (USF) in collaboration with FINA under its development programme 2011, held a swimming coaches (level 2) intermediate clinic from January 24 to February 3 in Kampala, Uganda.
The clinic’s primary focus was on building capacity of coaches in Uganda. The objectives of the clinic were to (1) to develop high caliber swimming coaches in Uganda (2) to build on the previously held FINA swimming level 1 clinic in 2010. USF is of the firm view that these objectives were fully met.
The clinic was facilitated by Mr. Gerd Nottelmann of Germany and was attended by 18 participants (all male) drawn from clubs registered with USF. The sessions were highly interactive. The participants acknowledged that they found the clinic rewarding.
FINA holds first Diving Judges Development school (SIN)
The first ever FINA Diving Judges Development School was held in Singapore on the 22nd and 23rd of January 2011. There were a total of 23 local participants and 7 foreign participants from Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Qatar. The school was conducted by a lecturer, Ann Sissons, from New Zealand, who is a member of the FINA Technical Diving Committee. This event serves to enlarge the pool of quality judges in the sport, ensuring that there is a uniform pattern of interpretation and application of diving rules from the judges. The course is also used as a tool to develop and promote diving worldwide.
Olympic Solidarity concludes 2010 in Kigali (RWA)
The FINA/IOC Olympic Solidarity Development Programme concluded its 2010 activities in Kigali, Rwanda, where a Technical Course for Coaches (Beginner level) took place from December 6-16.
German expert Joshua Neuloh introduced the techniques and rules of swimming (strokes, starts and turns) as well as the fundamentals of coaching to 24 eager participants, all local. An oral examination took place at the end of the course, which all passed successfully.
Olympic Solidarity builds a legacy for swimming in Ethiopia
After the Bahamas, the FINA/IOC Olympic Solidarity Development Programme made another stop on the African continent, this time in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from November 27 to December 5, where a technical course (beginner to intermediate level) gathering 30 participants who aspire to coach swimming in their country took place.
Referees and Officials attend OWS clinic in Guatemala City (GUA)
An open water swimming clinic for Beginner-level Referees and Officials was held in the capital of Guatemala on November 11-19, 2010. 18 participants, all locals except one from Panama and two from El Salvador, attended the clinic, which was given by FINA TOWSC Member, Tomas Haces German from Cuba.
The programme comprised OWS fundamentals and practice during a 5km and 10km events, which took place during the Central America and Mexico Swimming Championships for age groups (CAMEX). There, participants occupied different arbitration positions in the same session of competitions.
Swimming clinic gathers Coaches and Judges from all Central America (NCA)
An excellent clinic took place in Managua, Nicaragua, for Swimming Coaches and Judges (Advanced Level) from October 25-29. In all, 27 participants attended, among which two came from Costa Rica, two from Honduras, two from Guatemala, and one from El Salvador.
David Gerardo del Cueto Jimenez travelled from Cuba to share his knowledge about coaching and judging in swimming. Both coaches and judges showed great interest during the theory and practice sessions.
It proved to be a very encouraging clinic for the further development of swimming in the Central American region.
