PR 45 - World League (W) 2014: Team USA clinches eighth crown

Lausanne (SUI), June 15, 2014 – The 2014 Super Final edition of the FINA Women’s Water Polo World League concluded successfully with the teams of Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Italy, Russia, Spain and USA delivering world-class women’s water polo in Kunshan, China, from June 10-15. 

The gold-medal match was played between Italy, a three-time World League finalist, and USA, current Olympic champions and record World League winner of seven titles. The Americans triumphed over the Italians in a tight 10-8.

The battle for the minor medal brought together defending World League champions China and Australia, second at FINA World Championships last year. The Australians proved too strong for the local squad, winning 7-2. This is the fifth medal of this colour for Australia in the World League.

In the play-off for fifth and sixth places, reigning World champions Spain outscored Canada 8-7. Russia, second in the World League last year, beat Brazil 8-7, whose team closed the rankings.

The overall winner receives US$50’000 in prize money and a total US$262’500 is divided among the 14 participating teams.
