Big day for Swimming as Olympic legend Phelps returns to competition
A record-setting 22-time Olympic Games medallist, American Michael Phelps will swim competitively for the first time since winning six medals, four of them gold, at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 28-year-old will join a star-studded field, including Olympic gold medallists Ryan Lochte and Katie Ledecky, at the Arena Grand Prix in Mesa (USA) on April 24-26. Phelps will compete in the 50m freestyle and the 100m butterfly, an event in which he holds the world record.
At a press conference today, Phelps told the Associated Press: "I'm doing this for me. If I don't become as successful as you all think I would be or should be and you think it tarnishes my career, then that's your own opinion. I'm doing this because I want to come back and I enjoy being in the pool and I enjoy being in the sport of swimming."
