PR 21 - Diving World Series 2014: World’s diving elite meets in Beijing (CHN) for opening leg

Lausanne (SUI), March 13, 2014 – On March 14-16, Beijing’s iconic Water Cube will host the opening leg of the 8th FINA/NVC Diving World Series. The world’s top divers will be in action at the first meet of the Series, competing in a total eight events: men’s and women’s 3m springboard and 10m platform, both individual and synchro.

Remaining virtually unbeaten in all previous World Series editions, Chinese divers are expected to impress once again at this first stop at home. Podium contenders include reigning World champion He Chong (CHN, 3m springboard), 2013 Series overall winner Yahel Castillo (MEX, 3m springboard), current Olympic champion David Boudia (USA, 10m platform), reigning World champion Qiu Bo (CHN, 10m platform) and 2013 Series overall winner Victor Minibaev (RUS, 10m platform).

Chinese greats Minxia Wu, Zi He (3m springboard), Ruolin Chen and Huixia Liu (10m platform), 2012 Olympic bronze medallist and 2013 Series runner-up Laura Sanchez (MEX, 3m springboard) and 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Pandelela Rinong Pamg (MAS) will ensure a tough competitive field among women.

Launched in 2007, the FINA/NVC Diving World Series is a high-profile competition which offers an annual meeting opportunity for the world’s brightest diving stars. Each year, the best-ranked divers from previous Olympic Games, World Championships and World Cups are invited to take part in three-day meets.

At each meet, US$96,000 of prize money is reserved for the three best divers of all eight individual and synchro events. Moreover, an overall prize money amounting US$87,000 will be divided between the top-six divers in each event – totalling US$696,000.
