PR 82 - SWC 2013: Japan sets new WR in mixed free relay, Hosszu bags eight medals

Lausanne (SUI), October 19, 2013 – Chad Le Clos (RSA) and Katinka Hosszu (HUN) took the spotlight at the Dubai leg of the FINA Swimming World Cup 2013, organised from October 17-18.

On day 2 at the iconic Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex, Japan took out the 4x50m mixed freestyle relay in 1:32.52, setting a new World and meet record.

Among women, top qualifier Hosszu, who swam nine events over the two days, won the 200m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 200m and 400m IM, collecting a total eight medals (4 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze). The Hungarian versatile swimmer topped the medal table in Dubai and increased her tremendous lead even more with 468 points in the general standings.

Hosszu is currently followed by Spain’s Mireia Belmonte (169 points), winner of the 800m freestyle in 8:14.12. Placing third is Alia Atkinson from Jamaica (135 points), who touched first in the 100m breaststroke in 1:02.91, the best female performance (990 points). Atkinson also won the 100m IM, stopping the clock at 58.45.

In the men’s field, Le Clos’ blistering mark in the 200m butterfly (1:49.07), .03 shy off his own World record from the Eindhoven stop, earned the meet’s best performance (1001 points). Walking away with three gold and one silver, the 21-year-old sensation remains the dominant force with a total 266 points. Russia’s Vladimir Morozov, winner of the 50m and 100m freestyle, is second with 201 points. Australian Robert Hurley, who picked up four gold and one silver, is currently third in the overall rankings with 141 points.
