PR 76 - 10km: World champions Lurz and Okimoto win penultimate race in Shantou
Lausanne (SUI), September 30, 2013 – The penultimate stop of the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup 2013 was held in Shantou (CHN) on September 29. In all, 27 women and 34 men from ten countries took the departure in the Xin Jin River.
It was a tight finish among men with multiple World champion Thomas Lurz (GER) winning by a fingernail in 1h46m56s54. Climbing the podium in five stages of the Series this year, Lurz continues to reinforce his overall lead. Brazil’s Allan do Carmo took second in 1h46m57s30, his best result in the 2013 circuit. Romain Beraud (FRA), winner of the first two legs, rounded out the podium with a time of 1h46m58s03.
A tough race also unfolded in the women’s field. 10km World champion Poliana Okimoto (BRA) touched first in 1h52m51s48, capturing her first World Cup medal this season. Runner-up Emily Brunemann (USA) completed the race in 1h52m52s41. The American swimmer continues to dominate the Series with a tally of three gold, a silver and a bronze. 10km World silver medallist Ana Marcela Cunha (BRA) took third, clocking 1h52m54s36.
