DGP 2013, San Juan day 2: Chinese divers top favourites ahead of finals
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Chinese divers easily advanced on Friday to the men's 3m springboard and women's 10m platform finals at the fifth meet of the FINA Diving Grand Prix 2013 taking place in San Juan, Puerto Rico from May 16-19.
Sun Zhiyi dominated the men's 3m springboard with 493.60 points, more than 44 points ahead of Brazil’s Cesar Castro, his closest challenger in the event. Zhiyi averaged 8.36 points in the event. Castro, a veteran of three Olympiads, said he is focusing on always improving his performance, but acknowledged the Chinese diving team has demonstrated to be "the strongest in the competition".
"I’m always focused on what I need to do to improve myself. The less I think about the other [competitors] the more energy I have to do what needs to be done", said Castro.
Also passing on to the men's 3m springboard final were Robert Paez (Venezuela) with 436.75 points, Yorick Bruijn (Netherlands) with 420.65, Cody Yano (Canada) with 412.95 and Constantin Blaha (Austria) with 367.60 points.
In the women's 10m platform, the divers from China, United States, Brazil and Venezuela were top qualifiers for the final. The number of competitors in this event allowed the judges to bypass the semifinal. Still, China's Jie Lin and Huang Xiaohui dominated the preliminary competition with 379.50 and 340.85 points, respectively. The closest competitor to Xiaohui was Delaney Schnell from the United States with 278.10 points.
