DGP 2013, Fort Lauderdale day 4: China completes sweep of gold
FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida – Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif./Austin, Texas) won the silver medal on 3m Sunday as the fourth stop of the FINA Diving Grand Prix came to a close at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex.
China completed the sweep, winning four more gold medals to walk away with victories on all eight events this week. He Chao won the men’s 3m gold and Jie Lian took the women’s platform title. Zhang Jun and Qu Lin paired for the women’s 3m synchro crown, and Huo Liang and Jian Yan teamed up to win the men’s 10m synchro title.
Dumais scored 474.50 points en route to his silver medal on 3m, while He Chao scored 533.25 for the gold. Dumais, a 2012 Olympic bronze medallist in 3m synchro, was in third place with two dives to go. He turned in his top two scores in the final two rounds, scoring 84 points on his reverse 3.5 tuck and 86.70 points on his front 2.5 with 2 twists, to move up one spot in the standings as China’s Sun Zhiyi dropped to third.
“I gave up some points, but I’m using this meet as a building block for (next week's World Championships Trials). It’s been hard because I’ve been travelling so much. It’s hard if you’re just competing and don’t get much training time,” said Dumais, who competed in Beijing, Dubai and Edinburgh in March and April.
USA’s Murphy Bromberg (Bexley, Ohio) competed in her first senior international final and placed fourth in women’s 10m with 331.60 points. Jie scored 392.80 points for the gold, with teammate Huang Xiaohui taking silver at 368.55. Ukraine’s Julia Prokopchuk scored 346.15 for the bronze.
“I’m really happy with how I did. It was just my second senior international meet and my first final. There were a couple dives I could have done better on, but this was a really good experience for me,” Bromberg said.
Huo, one half of the 2008 Olympic gold-medal winning synchro team, teamed up with Jian for 460.77 points and the 10m synchro gold. Germany’s Sascha Klein and Patrick Hausding, the 2008 Olympic silver medallists, scored 425.79 points for the Grand Prix silver as well.
In women’s 3m synchro, Zhang and Qu paired for 311.40 points for the gold. Ukraine’s Anna Pysmenska and Olena Fedorova were second at 293.70, and Malaysia’s Ng Yan Yee and Cheong Jun Hoong scored 282.90 for bronze.
