FINA Development takes action in Southeast Africa
Two excellent clinics for swimming coaches were held in Lusaka, Zambia, and Lilongwe, Malawi, from March 12-23 and March 26-April 3, respectively.
In Lusaka, experienced coach Rick Powers from USA trained 16 coaches and 60 swimmers. The clinic programme included Learn to Swim progression for the 4 strokes, physiology of training, planning a season for all levels, test sets, tapering, IM training, mental preparation, officials training and parent education.

Powers then headed to Malawi to conduct another clinic, which was attended by 11 coaches and 56 swimmers. Since many of the coaches were beginners, Powers covered teaching methods for the 4 strokes, starts and turns as well as season planning for all levels, with an emphasis on mega, meso and microcycles. The course also included the preparation of the Malawi team for the upcoming CANA Regional Championships.

All participants were very enthusiastic. The practical sessions allowed the coaches to put to use in the pool the techniques they learned in the classroom sessions, which was very useful for them.
