Only four months ahead of the inauguration of the 15th FINA World Championships Barcelona 2013, event organisers have welcomed another group of people to the headquarters at the main competition venue Palau Sant Jordi. This week, the Sports Medicine Committee of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) is visiting the sports facilities to get an update on the project.

The long workday on Monday started off with a visit to the different competition venues (Palau Sant Jordi, Picornell Pool, Montjuïc Municipal Pool and Moll de la Fusta) and continued with several meetings, focusing on two key areas of the Barcelona 2013 World Championships: Medical Services and Doping Control.

The first presentation was held by Dutch Cees-Rein van den Hoogenband, Chairman of FINA Sports Medicine Committee and father of Pieter, former World and Olympic champion. Hoogenband was accompanied by Joan García, deputy director of the Barcelona 2013 Services Department, Dr. Nuria Torres, head of the BCN 2013 Medical Services, and Dr. Lluis Franques.

While different topics were discussed in the meeting, the key points were the responsibilities of each department, the medical staff, the communication system, the transport in case of an emergency, the operational monitoring system, the hospital services, the development of the injury and disease prevention programme, logistical support, etc.

The second main point on the agenda, the Doping Control Programme, was presented by Prof. Andrew Pipe, Chairman of the FINA Doping Control Review Board, Johan Lefebvre, FINA representative, Dr. Piero Galilea, who will lead the Doping Control during the World Championships, and Mado Madonar, head of the Barcelona 2013 Services Department.

Issues related to roles and responsibilities, location of control rooms in each competition venue, staff, security guards, chain of custody, communication and translators among others were discussed in the meeting.
