A FINA Development clinic for Swimming Officials was held in conjunction with the Theodist National Championships from April 18-22. The theory part took place from April 18-20 while the practical section was organised from 20-22 at the Sir Donald Cleland Pool.

The clinic provided a chance for all schools in NCDC to send a representative to learn about the fundamentals of conducting a swimming competition in a professional manner under FINA rules. Vice Chairman of the FINA Technical Swimming Committee Don Blew conducted the course, which was attended by 24 enthusiastic participants.

Elizabeth Wells, President PNGSI said: "Don, a friend to PNG Swimming comes to us with a great wealth of experience and knowledge in officiating worldwide under the FINA umbrella; at Olympic Games, FINA World Championships (short and long course), Commonwealth Games, National Championships to name a few. He has also presented over the past years at FINA World Technical Congresses, Oceania Congresses and has conducted many a clinic in our Region."

"Excellence in performance and in life begins with a vision of where you want to go and a commitment to do what it takes to get there. An important key result area of PNGSI is to upgrade the level of our technical officials in the country to a FINA recognised standard that will allow our members to officiate in competitions on pool deck at the national and international level as we prepare for the 2015 Pacific Games," she added.

Don Blew also commented on the success of the clinic: "The participants were keen, asked questions and showed they were prepared to listen and learn at the practical sessions held in conjunction with PNG Championships."
