PR 16 - European preliminaries: Spain gets final ticket to Super Final
Lausanne (SUI), March 21, 2012 – In a thrilling sixth round of the European preliminaries of the FINA Men’s Water Polo World League 2012, held on March 20, Spain qualified for the Super Final of the competition, joining Italy and Croatia.
In Group C, the Iberians easily defeated in Barcelona the team of Turkey (12-3), but had to wait for the outcome of the second match, opposing Greece and Romania in Athens. The hosts won by the minimal difference (10-9), generating a three-team tie in the lead of the group (Spain, Greece and Romania, all with 12 points). Using the tie-breaking rules, the first criteria (points of the games between the teams) was not decisive (6 points for the three squads), so the final order came by using the second criteria (the goal average in the games played between these teams). In this item, Spain was first (34-32), followed by Greece (32-32) and by Romania (33-35).
The other game of the day, in Group A, saw Russia winning in Manchester against Great Britain by 11-9. Italy was already qualified in this group, while Croatia was the strongest in Group B.
Joining these three European teams in the Super Final, to be played in Almaty (KAZ) from June 12-17, will be five other teams, selected as follows: two teams from the Americas tournament (scheduled for May 10-13 with the participation of Brazil, Canada, USA and Venezuela), two teams from the Asia/Oceania tournaments (first in Shanghai, China, from May 3-5, and then in Chiba, Japan, from May 8-10, with the participation of Australia, China, Japan and Kazakhstan), and the host country of the Super Final (Kazakhstan).
