PR 13 - Opening leg gathers the best in Dubai (UAE)

2012

Lausanne (SUI), March 15, 2012 - The best divers in the world have rendezvous in Dubai (UAE) for the first leg of the FINA/Midea Diving World Series 2012, to take place on March 16-17. This competition constitutes a premiere for Dubai in this discipline and will be held in a venue well-known to the FINA Family, the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Sports Complex, site of the 10th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in December 2010.

Some weeks after the conclusion of the 18th FINA Diving World Cup in London (GBR), the diving elite faces this first out of the four legs in the series – after Dubai, the competition will stop in Beijing (CHN, March 23-24), Moscow (RUS, April 13-14) and Tijuana (MEX, April 20-21) – as a decisive evaluation before the Olympic Games, next August in the British capital.

Following the previous years’ supremacy, the team of China will naturally be the squad to beat in Dubai, as they present their best assets in the Emirates: among men, Chong He (3m springboard) and Qiu Bo (10m platform) and in the women’s field Minxia Wu (3m springboard) and Ruolin Chen (10m platform). China also dominated the recent FINA Diving World Cup, taking all the eight titles on offer.

Facing the Asian delegation, many other countries also sent strong teams to this first leg of the FINA/Midea Diving World Series: Russia, Canada, USA, Mexico, Italy, Ukraine, Great Britain or Malaysia are among the powerhouse capable of producing good results in the United Arab Emirates.

The FINA/Midea Diving World Series is a high-profile competition which offers an annual meeting opportunity for the world’s brightest diving stars. Launched in 2007 with three host organisers (Great Britain, China and Mexico), other countries have since joined the club (Qatar, Russia and the United Arab Emirates), definitely adding an international dimension to the event. In 2012, this event will distribute a total of US$ 576’000 in prize money to the best divers in action.
