16th FINA World Sports Medicine Congress - Manchester 2008

“Optimising Performance and Promoting Health” was the theme of the XVIth FINA World Sports Medicine Congress held in Manchester, Great Britain on April 7-8, 2008.  Over 200 participants from all 5 continents of the world attended to participate in the discussions and to share their experiences in aquatic sports medicine and sport science.  This Congress had the highest record of attendance of all FINA World Sports Medicine Congresses.

Professor Arne Ljungqvist was the Bleasdale Memorial speaker who opened the Congress. He addressed the important partnership between the IOC & WADA in promoting health in the athlete.

The subthemes for this Congress included:

* Child / Athlete Protection
* Medical Issues in Aquatic Sports
* Injuries in Aquatic Sports
* The Disabled Athlete
* Injury Prevention in Aquatic Disciplines
* Sports Psychology
* Biomechanics
* Physiology
* Population Health

In addition to the invited keynote speakers, there was a strong representation from original researchers working in the field of aquatics. There were 24 Scientific Podium Presentations in the themes of:  Medicine, Psychology, Biomechanics, Physiology & Anti-Doping.  A further 23 Scientific Posters were presented.

Two new features of the FINA World Sports Medicine Congress were the Pool Workshops and Aquatic Sport for Health Promotion.  The pool workshops facilitated the practical application of the science to the athlete in their competitive and training environment.  The Aquatic Sport for Health Promotion section focussed on improving population health and the prevention of chronic obesity and illness in a series of special sessions.
